Make sure the water and ice from your refrigerator is as clean and fresh tasting as possible by replacing its water filter. This Whirlpool PuR water filter is used in Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, and JennAir side-by-side refrigerators with filter access in the base grille.

Whirlpool 4396841 filter
Effective filtering

It's NSF-certified to reduce cysts, particulates (class I), lead, mercury, and more. (The contaminants or other substances removed or reduced by this water filter are not necessarily in all users' water.) While it effectively removes contaminants from your water and ice, this filter also lowers the taste and odor of chlorine while retaining beneficial fluoride.

For the highest quality water and ice, your refrigerator's water filter needs to be changed over a period of time as its effectiveness at cleaning the water is reduced. For optimal results, you should replace this refrigerator water filter every 6 months to ensure clean, safe drinking water and ice.

Your refrigerator will even remind you when to change its filter, turning on an indicator light found near the water dispenser. Changing the filter is easy--just locate the old filter, twist and turn it until it becomes loose, then pull the old filter out and replace with the new filter.

This model (4396841) can be used to replace the following models of water filter:

  • 4396842
  • 8212650

Replacing Your Water Filter

For side-by-side refrigerators with filter access in the base grille, follow these instructions for replacing your filter:

  1. Push the eject button, then pull the filter cap. Do not twist cap.
  2. Remove the filter cap by turning it counter clockwise. Set aside cap. Discard old filter.
  3. Remove the packaging and O-ring covers from the new filter.
  4. Align arrows on the cap and new filter. Turn clockwise to snap in place.
  5. Push filter into the base grill until the eject button pops. Gently tug on cap to ensure it is snug.
  6. Flush the water system until a total of 3 gallons (12 L) has been dispensed.

Overall we have found this to be a great water filter. But we have had our water tested by a professional, both at the tap, and at the filtered tap on the refrigerator. Both waters tested the same for chlorine content, however, the particle contaminants were greatly reduced by the filter on the refrigerator.

Something to note on your water filter.

The light is merely a timed indicator of when they want you to replace the filter. Think of it as a "countdown timer" that starts as soon as you reset it. It is in no way measuring the amount of water you are consuming... Personally, I used to change out the filter every 6 months when the indicator light came on, but we rarely use the water/ice now, so I haven't changed it (or reset it) in over a year although I probably will soon. I actually cut the first one in half to see how "contaminated" the filter was and to my surprise, it looked like a brand new filter...

The life of a filter depends on a couple of things.
1. The amount of contaminants in your water (well water is typically the worst)
2. The amount of water that passes through the filter

If you have low contaminants and/or use very little filtered water, your filter will last much longer than 6 months. If you pay attention to the amount of water flow and the size of your ice cubes, you can more accurately determine the proper time to replace the filter.

I have county water and we also have installed a "whole house" water filtration system, so I can probably get closer to 2 years out of a filter. Obviously, not everyone has these installed though, just use common sense on when to replace your filter and you'll be fine.

P.S. Why is it more expensive per unit to buy the 3-pack than it is to buy the 2-pack? Am I the only one that found this odd?

Got a bad batch of filters that made our water taste horrible. The manufacturer refused to stand behind their product and wouldn't even consider exchanging them for a new set. Amazon customer service went above and beyond for me to make it right. They took care of the exchange themselves directly.

Few months ago, I installed a Whirlpool whole house water filter - model WHELJ1 to "improve" water quality at home. I just came to know that the filtered water actually concerns me. I recently set up an aquarium with a handful of fish. After one of them died, I tested the tank water. It showed high level of nitrite. I further tested my tap water, it showed the same level of nitrite, above EPA recommended level. Then I bypassed Whirlpool filter, nitrite level became 0.
After bypassing the whole house water filter, I wanted to rely on my refrigerator for drink water because it has a filter, right? Experience told me to test the filtered water before using it. It came out with high level of both nitrate and nitrite. No surprise, the filter on my refrigerator is Whirlpool 4396841.

The first filter in the set did a fine job. However the 2nd one left the water tasting horrible. We flushed through at least 6 gallons before giving in and buying another. I will only purchase one at a time from now on, since I didn't know about the defect until I could no longer return it. BEWARE!

I am a longtime user of this quality filter that I have just started purchasing through Amazon at a much lower cost. The filters do a great job filtering water impurities for me that has saved countless dollars from bottled water purchases. Before using the filtered water from the fridge we were buying cases of water weekly that quickly adds up. I can definitely taste the difference between filtered and non filtered water out of my tap since we have hard water in our area. Like all filters these are designed to filter out particles above a certain micron in size so they won't do any good if you have a major unique water problem that is bigger than what these filters are designed to handle. I know individuals that have unique well water problems that require a whole house filtering system in addition to filters like these to get acceptable results. Our municipal water is treated very well so these filters do a great job fine tuning what comes out of our tap & ice maker so I am very happy with their performance but am way happier with the lower cost delivered to my door within 2 days. I understand that total filter flow through the filter over time is what dictates filter changes instead of the recommended 6 month timeframe but the 6 months has generally worked for me. So you may be able to save more if you use less ice & water from your fridge since a single user will use less than two users and so on since infrequent use results in fewer gallons flowing through the filter each day that that ultimately extends the filter life. I like these filters and will continue to buy them as long as Amazon keeps the price right.

Do not! I say do not buy a pack of 3 filters from Amazon. Amazon will not help if it don't work and you're catch it soon enough. My recommendation is to buy 1 filter. I bought a pack of 3 filters. Put one in my fridge and after 5-6 months of use it was time to replace the filter. I put in a second one from the pack and after passing more than 10 litters of water on it, the water had a bitter taste. So something is wrong with the filter. I contacted amazon and they told me because I out of refund window they can't help me. I told them how would I have known it wasn't going to work? Amazon refused to offer me an exchange and said to contact the manufacturer and I am stock with a filter that don't work.
Don't buy a 3 pack, don't do it.
