Three stars because Whirlpool drastically reduced the flow rate through these filters compared to the first couple of sets I purchased in the past. Using these new filters it it takes a frustratingly long time to fill a glass with water. I checked my old filter cartridges and I could easily see that the hole in the connection nipple of the new filters is much smaller than the old ones. Whirlpool may have made this change to possibly improve the filtering function by greatly slowing the rate at which the water flows through the filters. I used the new filters for a few days and it just bugged me every time I had to wait for the water to slowly trickle into my glass. I removed my new filters and drilled out the hole in the connection nipple to match the larger size of my old filters. The flow rate is great again and I am happy now. I don't think most people are going to want to drill out their new filters so I think anybody that doesn't have unusually high pressure in their water pipes is not going to be happy with the flow rate of these new filters. It can be easily fixed but I think most won't want to do it.
Here are the replacement instructions. I kid you not.
1. Remove filters and replace with new filters.
2. Flush system for 10 minutes.
Yes, it is about that easy. My only question is whether to turn off the water first. It doesn't say to, but I do anyway, just in case (see update).
The filters also come with a battery for the electronic monitor - but I don't use that. I just replace them about every 6 months.
UPDATE 2013-03-23: I tried changing the filters without turning off the water, and YES, it WORKS! But some water did come out - but not more than can be wiped with a hand towel - so have something available to catch or wipe up the water if you do it this way. If you turn off the water first, then you'll still get some water leakage, but not as much.
This filter system does not have very high flow. Also after replacing it will be extremely slow until it is purged of air. This could take 15 or 20 minutes of operation to purge most of the air and even then there might still have small amounts. The flow will gradually increase during this time.
I have a single cartridge GE system in my bathroom that offers surprisingly high flow, but the taste of the water is not as good as the Whirlpool two stage. In the hot summer months my city tap water can start to taste bad.
These are also Certified to NSF/ANSI 42 & 53 Water Purification Standards, which is quite good, more than sufficient for US city tap water. Probably a good idea for sketchy well water or in a country where water quality is in question.
All this being said there are now alternatives in replacable filter element systems that offer similar specifications. I am currently researching the Pentair/Pentek Carbon Line of filters for my boat. The FloPlus Specifically which was rated highly in a Sailing Publication. It should prove much mor economical over time.
The water is tastier after being filtered through our setup than without filtration. Actually, I suppose I should say it has less taste, which I find preferable.
Changing the filters could not be easier.
As of this date, the price for this item at my local home improvement store is $51.36, so that's where I'll buy it until Amazon can beat them.
More generally, we like how easy these filters are to replace and enjoy the improvement in taste of the filtered water over that of plain tap water, which is heavily chlorinated here. Our cats seem to drink more, too, which is good for them.
Oh, and it comes with a button battery for the warning light on the tap but since we use the calendar instead of the warning light to remind us to change the filters, the battery comes in handy for other things like a scale, etc.

Been using this filter system for about 6 years. I'm satisfied with it. I tested the tap water for chlorine with my pool tester, there was almost as much as in the pool. Read morePublished 21 days ago by snc
