Now, in terms of the story itself, when Maverick and Scarlett realize they were falling in love with each other, my response was: Based on what? There is a lot more attention paid to the adventure/mystery of the story (which was good reading) than their burgeoning love for each other. Did they have chemistry, yes, but they barely talked about anything really. They have two moments of intense dialogue where they talk about past hurts but other than that, there's a lot of self-dialogue about why they are wrong for each other. I also didn't really like Scarlett that much. I know she's young but she needs a LOT more backbone. Her manager treated her like she was a kid, and after awhile, I could see why, because she acted like one. Her inability to take up for herself and stand firmly by her decisions had me questioning if Scarlett worked for her manager or did her manager work for her. While Maverick proclaims his love for Scarlett, when he thinks she's betrayed him, he didn't give her a chance to explain, was verbally abusive and to me his behavior bordered on being physically and sexually violent. I know this book is for grown folks and things can get passionate in the heat of anger, but that's one of the reasons why angry sex isn't always safe. Again, it made me wonder: "and exactly why does she like this guy". I thought Malaki, Mavericks' brother and Koda were nicer people.
So, I do plan to get the next installment but I hope that in the next book 1) there is more focus on romance; 2) we can get a better sense of WHY the couple falls for each other; 3) the book features Malaki or Koda.
I love romance. I love it when there is a spark and there is no one else for them once they meet. Unfortunately in this one Maverick uses women to get himself some relief so to speak for a while after they met. Somewhat of a deal breaker for me, but since they were not really involved yet it may not be for others. He is also a complete jerk to her in the end even knowing her history. There was a scene at the end that I really didn’t like either.
Overall it kept my attention, and after the first quarter of the book seems to pick up. That last sex scene with Scarlett and Maverick together was definitely unrealistic considering her past, and honestly just too much. I wouldn’t recommend.
Scarlett, a famous country singer, is feeling lost in her life now after a terribly abusive relationship. Maverick is a member of the Iron Fury MC but had been off in his own for awhile now after a tragedy. They meet and instantly see the others pain. Scarlett tells Mav about her horrific experience with her ex, Treyton. It takes Mav longer to open up about his past but eventually does so all while falling in love with Scarlett. When Treyton reappears, Mav calls in his brothers from the MC to help protect Scarlett. But things are getting too coincidental with Scarlett's ex and issues the MC has been having with someone trying to push drugs into their turf. Threats are made, warnings are given, people are hurt. The MC has to stop this and if that means going to war, so be it.
