HJ Bellus spins a turbulent tale of gut-wrenching loss, revenge, and redemption that culminates in a love so deep and perfect, it's the stuff of fairy tales. Except this fairy tale features a gun-wielding, whiskey-sloshing hero who wears a cowboy hat and has more demons than notches on his well-used bedpost...exactly the type of man who needs saving." -USA Today Best Selling Author, Kristen Luciani

We know Navy's ex is a bad guy, touching on physical and emotional abuse as well as torture, rape, a stolen child and a pregnancy. I didn't find the details too graphic as the book focused more on Navy's emotional problems with a scattering of memories here and there. The ex is also high up in a Mexican cartel, however I didn't find it suspenseful like some other readers. It was pretty predictable and a lot of sections were really cheesy, with the dialogue and storyline failing to suck me in, making it hard to fully enjoy the book. There was no forbidden love. J.J. rescued Navy from her husband as a settlement for a 100K debt and he liked her and made it clear. The ex took it personally and came after her (even though he offered her in the first place). That's pretty much it.
The book had a few typos but nothing to stress over. The writing was solid enough and the supporting characters good, I just didn't take to the book's style. Quite a few lines and plot directions were ridiculous and cliche to the point where I started skimming bits. There was a lot of nothing.
The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger to set up for the next book that I assume focuses on Kemp, J.J.'s best friend. I won't be finding out.

First, I'm in love with this cover and I was totally sucked in by the blurb, because this story ticks off so many likes for me. Hot, alpha Texas tycoon who likes to save people. Nice.
The writing was flawless and the side characters in this book certainly add, rather than detract from the story, but it just fell short. It was like a mash up, you know those videos where they string a bunch of stuff together and you feel dizzy...that's how I walked away from this book. Was it about the cartel, was it about oil barons wanting to be king of their world, was it mafia-like with people being hurt for owing a debt, was it captor and captive with a side of rescue me. I wanted to love it, I really did, but I couldn't reconcile some of the MCs behavior with being the good guys.
Unfortunately, this one isn't my cup of tea.
HJ Bellus is a wonderful storyteller, and knows just how to make you feel everything that her characters do - and then some. You will laugh, cry and swoon. Read this book and JJ will become a favorite book boyfriend.

There’s plenty of trouble ,sex, love, and some bits were funny .
Definitely going to read the next in the series.
JJ was saved & made it his duty & did everything in his power to do the same to others. Navy was definitely suffering & he brought her out of her shell. The secondary characters were like family to everyone & when a lost little girl is added into the mix it is truly a heartwarming yet wrenching tale.
If you want to find out more about these characters, the next book deals with Kemp & his journey.
