About the Author
Wall Street Journal and #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author Melinda Leigh is a fully recovered banker. A lifelong lover of books, she started writing as a way to preserve her sanity when her youngest child entered first grade. During the next few years, she joined Romance Writers of America, learned a few things about writing a novel, and decided the process was way more fun than analyzing financial statements. Melinda’s debut novel, She Can Run, was nominated for Best First Novel by the International Thriller Writers. She’s also garnered Golden Leaf and Silver Falchion Awards, along with nominations for two RITAs and three Daphne du Maurier Awards. Her works include the She Can series, the Morgan Dane novels, the Scarlett Falls novels, the Midnight novels, and the Rogue River novellas. She holds a second-degree black belt in Kenpo karate, teaches women’s self-defense, and lives in a messy house with her husband, two teenagers, a couple of dogs, and two rescue cats.

4.5 Hearts Tessa Black finds herself facing another murder investigation when local construction worker washes up on the shores of one of the Widow’s Islands. As the hunt begins the number of potential killers keeps going up. It seems no one in Widow’s Island like Jason.
Tessa has to balance the hunt for a killer, taking care of her mother and little sister and a newly forming relationship. Add on top of that the ongoing mystery of the disappearance to her and Cate’s childhood friend will bring the girls a new clue to follow.
Whisper of Bones is the third novella in the Widow’s Island series that is written by Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. If you haven’t read the first two novellas Close to the Bone and A Bone to Pick I would highly suggest you go get these and read them. You could pick up novella three and start her but the first two novellas give you the back story of Tessa & Cate. I am already looking forward to reading the next installment in this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley & Montlake Romance in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
Fortunately for Widow's Island, they have a sheriff's office and a deputy good at what they do and an FBI agent trying to overcome a violent episode in which she was shot and her partner killed. However, this novella was over almost before it had started. I have to admit I was surprised at how short the story was. I remember one time reading an email or FB post by J.R. Rain, author of the Samantha Moon, vampire detective, series of books that told how many words a book had to have to be considered a novel and the number for other forms of literature.
I realize that the first two books in the series were longer than these two books but those books required introduction to the persons involved in this series. It was important that we know their backgrounds and why they were involved with the islands and its inhabitants.
All of that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and read it and the subsequent Novella by Melinda Leigh (No. 4) in a very short period of time. They were both extremely interesting books and it is apparent that the first three books are leading up to a climactic confrontation. I would have given this book more than 3 stars if it had just been a bit longer and fleshed out the characters and their interaction in more depth. Other than that, I strongly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys reading mysteries/thrillers and Kendra Elliot's and Melinda Leigh's books like I do.
The short, fast read will invigorate your day with a tightly written plotline, easy to finish in one sitting. Melinda Leigh's great storytelling creates a believable and exciting adventure in this novella, without the clutter and distractions of a longer, more complex book.
The Audible narration was again well portrayed and a great supplement to my reading experience.
Looking forward to the next installment.
Good plot and characters. Anxious to read about Missing Sam's cold case.
A little romance thrown in. A murder mystery, and finding the clues on who done it.
Also three girlfriends that hung out together in their teens and one goes missing when they were 14.
Now Tessa and Cate are in law enforcement and they start looking for her. Hopefully they will find out what happened years ago.
Melinda is an excellent suspense writer.
The body of a local contractor is found washed ashore.
As Tessa investigates she uncovers more & more questions that lead to many suspects.
I was sure, I had figured out who killed Jason. Nope.
Let's see if you can follow the breadcrumbs and decipher the mystery.

It was so really tense reading towards the end. But as usual Melinda Leigh nailed it.
