Book Review- Whisper to Me by Christina Lee

Rachel has decided to come home and help her mom for the summer. She hasn’t really been back since she left for college three years ago. After a motorbike accident, her near death injury and being dumped by her boyfriend she decided that she needed to go where no one knew anything about her and she could be someone else.
However everything she tried to run from the last three years comes crashing into her once she goes home. She comes face to face with her ex and all the people who let her down when she was in the hospital. She also has to face her guilt of keeping her friends at arms length, using the boys at college to forget, and her new developing feelings for Kai. She is confused about what she is feeling, afraid he doesn’t feel the same and afraid of disappointing her best friend.
Kai has loved Rachel for three years but ignored his feelings. Spending time with her this summer brings everything to the fore front. He isn’t strong enough to admit what he feels but will take anything Rachel offers.
The summer turns into revealing truths and coming clean. Rachel’s shocking secrets come out and she has to live with the consequences.
I really loved Rachel’s story. In fact I’m extremely fond of this series. With Rachel the author dug into her character and alluded to why she behaved the way she did. It was shocking to the reader when her secrets were revealed and what she endured before she came to college. Ella, Avery, and even Dakota didn’t really know Rachel like they thought.
The love story between Rachel and Kai was almost torturous. They both had feelings but were too afraid to admit them. It would have saved some heartache if they would have said more before they went their separate ways.

I liked both these characters, and empathized with their struggles, which seemed very real and age appropriate. Rachel suffered a traumatic brain injury, and her college start was a fresh start for her personally, a chance to make new friends who didn't see her as the injured girl. However, she got off track and never dealt with her feelings for her prior boyfriend or the trauma, burying it underneath her surface layer of superficial happiness she showed her new friends, not allowing anyone in. Kai I also liked. He struggled to find his passion, to reconcile his love for music with his need to earn a living as a young adult. He took a different way out, numbing himself. Both of the needed to face the hurts and trials of actual life and quit covering it up, and by the end of the book they had made a good start on that.

Interpersonally though, they were still so timid, so afraid of each other and admitting their feelings for each other. They weren't truthful until the very last pages of the book. They were young, true, but not that young. Their hesitancy stood in opposition to their declarations of being best friends, of loving each other.

So, I liked this addition to the series but just didn't love it. This book probably read the "youngest" in terms of attitudes and actions than any of the others, and that impacted my enjoyment of it. I rate this one 3 stars, but enjoyed the prior books more, and would read more from this author as well.

What to say, what to say. Hmmmm. Give me a few minutes to process what I've just finished...

A few more...

*Takes deep breath* Okay. I think I can write coherent thoughts now, but I'm apologizing now when this review turns out to be a jumbled mess.

Now where to start. Rachel? Kai? Side characters? EVERYTHING??? Holy gosh I don't know! Those few minutes weren't enough, I don't think any amount of time will help me, let alone anyone who reads Whisper to Me.

Everything about this book leaves you at the very peak of the highest water-ride roller coaster on the hottest day of your existence (you're very high, hot and wet). No kidding. Seriously, if you have read the past two books in the Between Breaths series, you know Christina's relationships can be very hot. But holy heck, this is a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL.

Aside from the steaminess that goes on, Rachel's and Kia's story are deep. We don't know much about Kai but if you've read the other two books, you do KNOW Rachel. Well, at least we thought we did. But the things is, we do know her. We know her character and how she acts and what she wants. However, her intentions are revealed and her passion is surfaced with this book being her story. We feel everything that's going on in her head, nothing is left to the imagination. And essentially, our relationship grows with her.

And the same goes for Kai. Even though we just meet this hunk of a guy, his emotions are on his sleeve (I at least think so). He goes for what he wants full force, there really isn't anything stopping him. Even though he messes up a lot, his errors can be put down as human error (though not all of them can). We can't all strive to be perfect and Kai sets that example perfectly.

I really liked this book.. It was Rachel's story (I read about Avery and Bennets) and they did make a showing as well as Ella ....
Rachel was always so withdrawn and it was hard to get a grasp on her, so this was good to see her history.. she was a broken girl who dated her high school boyfriend, Miles (who she thought they were on the same page and were in love!) then the unthinkable happened.. an accident - miles couldn't take it because Rachel was severally hurt.. he took off.
her bff's Dakota and Kai helped her recovery.. well Dakota was her best friend and Kai's sister... but really, Kai was the one who helped her through the hard part of her recovery everyday..
Rachel was left devastated about Miles and then Kai left for Amsterdam for school and for his music, Dakota stayed and worked at family business while going to school and Rachel wanted to disappear where she wasn't the 'the girl who everyone pitied' the damaged broken hearted, wrecked, left with nobody... so she ran also, to another school and to keep numb, she had one night stands - not to get attached again so she wouldn't get her heart broken....
Ella and Avery became her bff's in college, but nobody knew her secret..
until Kai and Dekota come home and Rachel leaves college and goes back to her hometown and they all reunite..
Things start to happen between Kai and Rachel... things she just can't explain and Kai has been harboring a secret for more than 3 years....
this is a lot of emotions in the book.. it can be a stand alone, but I would read the other two just to understand the characters better ..
