Editorial Reviews

2014 deluxe 2-CD hardbound pop up book edition with a with a bonus CD featuring acoustic versions. Mike Rosenberg, aka Passenger's follow up to 2012's All the Little Lights, which featured the international hit single and 3x Platinum 'Let Her Go'. Recorded in Sydney and co-produced by Chris Vallejo, Whispers is comprised of 11 tracks that tell tales 'some real, some imagined' of love, death, growing up and getting old. A master of story telling, Passenger yet again strikes the perfect balance between the heartbreaking and the humorous, all wrapped in beautiful instrumentation, creating a sumptuous, symphonic sound.

'Let Her Go' grew on me like a wildfire and like most of his fans it's the reason I got into Passenger. I remember hearing it in 2012 and bought the album later that day. 'All The Little Lights' blew me away and one thing is for sure, the acoustic tracks made it worth the extra $2 for the deluxe version. Same story here, the deluxe is worth a couple extra dollars.

Passenger is a breath of fresh air in a world where pop rules. Good George Dubbya this is the best album of 2014 (so far.) Top marks lyrically, musically and vocally, Mike. This is destined be classic folk 30 years in the future like Simon and Garfunkel are now.

For the fuss buckets, this is one of those cardboard sleeve CD cases but with an added surprise (why spoil it?) and more importantly, lyrics! Alright, I'm off to listen to it again.

WHISPERS is the fifth and most recent album by indie-inflected folksinger/songwriter Michael David Rosenberg, who sings solo under the name of the group he founded eleven years ago, "Passenger." How I came to know about this highly accomplished and entertaining album, I don't know; but my life is better for it.

When performance and marketing categories are invoked to explain this gentle-voiced thirty-year-old's styles of music, it's usually in the "Indie" or "Folk" categories, but WHISPERS seems almost a world-music album of English-speaking countries just in its production. It was recorded in Sydney (where Rosenberg has returned to kick off his Australian tour), licensed in the USA, released by a Canadian company. Some post-production took place at Abbey Road. Rosenberg is the Scottish son of a Scottish mum and a Jewish-American dad. WHISPERS is a virtual amalgam of U.K. and American styles of successful (but not sellout) folk and folk-rock musicians from the early seventies to the present. Listen carefully and one can hear echoes of "string band," Bob Dylan (by way of Simon & Garfunkel), perhaps some Melissa Etheridge, definitely some Jackson Browne. The artists this album most reminds me of, though, are Bob Seger and pre-conversion Cat Stevens. Seger for the plaintive confessional quality in songs such as "Riding to New York" and "Scare Away the Dark"; Stevens in "Bullets," a gently convincing allegory of a too-violent society, and "Thunder," an anthem of personal life-quest using water metaphors ("I go running in circles, like baby turtles"). Passenger's wide but not deep voice, too well styled to be called "thin," is also reminiscent of Cat Stevens.

Wow. When I heard the first song of this album, I was amazed. My amazement continued until the last second of the last song. This album is truly a masterpiece of Passenger. I have always been a fan of Passenger, although listening to these songs has made me obsessed.
If you are contemplating buying this album, please take my advice:
You will NOT REGRET pirchasing this album and all of it's content. It will give you an idea of what excellent music sounds like.

Although I had pre-ordered this album, I initially had serious doubts as to whether it would stand up to the high bar he set with his last album or whether his sound would change too much after becoming famous worldwide. But after listening to this album all the way through five times in the two days I've had it, these fears have been firmly put to rest. It is a very rare occurrence that an artist manages to follow their breakout album with one of equal or greater quality but Mike really topped himself here.

In addition to the music, the Album artwork and booklet are designed masterfully. You aren't just getting plastic and a disc.

If you like real, meaningful music buy this album!

This is an excellent CD....beautiful, meaningful music by a true artist. Every time I listen to Passenger sing, the feeling I get is difficult to describe. The music is so real and I find a lot of meaning in his songs. Anyone who loves Passenger will love this CD. He stays true to his style of music and if you liked All the Little Lights, I have no doubt you will love this CD. There isn't a single song that I don't like. I especially love Whispers, Riding to New York, and Scare Away the Dark. The deluxe version comes with extra tracks, acoustic versions of some of the songs. Well worth the few extra dollars...and the case it comes in is very unique. I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this CD for quite awhile, and I was not disappointed on the first listen. Wonderful CD! I can't wait to see Mike perform on his Whispers tour this August!

I couldn't wait for Passenger's latest album to come out, having previously purchased 3 of them. He doesn't disappoint. The lyrics and melodies are so beautiful. His songs brings back memories of parts of our lives, the loves and the losses, and everything in between. Especially poignant is "Riding to New York", you picture the character in your mind and know how he feels. Thank you, Mike. See you in August on tour.

Another fantastic album from the brilliant singer-songwriter Mike Rosenberg, aka Passenger. His lyrics are, as always, poetic, stirring and witty. He paints vivid pictures and tells moving stories to beautiful melodies. The Deluxe edition of this CD is the one to get, because it adds acoustic versions of many songs -- which are like different interpretations of the same idea. I love both versions of each. Highlights:

"Whispers" is my current favorite. I love the very slow build up to the powerful, nearly shouted (ironically) climax.

"Scare Away the Dark" is a fun, catchy anthem to living life to the fullest.

"Start A Fire" paints an intriguing set of images... I interpret it a bit differently each time I listen. At least, when I'm not getting swept up in the mood, melody and instrumentation.

"Riding to New York" is a moving portrait of a dying man on a mission to reconnect with his adult children. Like many of his story songs, it felt like an homage to someone he'd encountered and struck up conversation with on his travels. Sure enough, it is.
