I bought this for a deaf dog that we recently adopted, and I almost returned it after the 1st week. But after doing some research and understanding how it actually works I decided to keep it and I'm mostly happy with it. Couple things to note:
1) I took the dog for a walk outside of the "zone" and was a little surprised that I didn't get an alert on my phone. Turned it off, then back on and suddenly got the alert. This frustrated me until I investigated further and discovered that the device only checks it's location every 10 minutes. I just didn't wait long enough. 10 minutes seems like a long time, but I understand that it uses a cell signal so I guess it makes sense that it's not "real-time".
2) Minus 1 Star!!! The iPhone application leaves much to be desired, and hasn't seen an update since October of 2012. That's 3 years ago!!! If I was in charge at this company, I would be embarrassed that the iPhone 6 is out, the 6s is quickly approaching, and the app for this collar was designed to work on an iPhone 4. I knocked off a whole star just for this reason.
3) Battery last much longer than I expected. I was thinking I would get 2-3 days out of it, but actually get closer to 2 -2 1/2 weeks.
4) The activity monitor had nothing to do with my purchase, but it works well and is good to see how active the puppy actually is.
5) Once you get an alert on the phone that the pet has left the "safe zone", that's the only alert you get unless you specifically request a "locate" or start "tracking" (the later which updates you every 3 minutes).
6) In three weeks of use, only once did it say my dog left the safe zone even though she hadn't (she was sitting right next to my wife on our deck). A few minutes later I got alerted again that she was back in the safe zone. It was a little strange, but like I said, it's only happened once.
Overall, after understanding it a little better, we decided to keep it and are pretty happy with it. But please Tagg....UPDATE the phone app!!!

the package was very easy to open. the activation process was easy. the activation process didn't mention the 30 day trial. so i guess i got a trial. Im not 100 % sure if i got a trial! the device comes with a charging station. the charging station needs 3 hours to charge the device. once charge they say it lasts for 10 to 30 days. theres a power and sleep buttons on the device. when you go for a walk , you press the snooze button , so it won't alert you. theres room on the account for several people to receive texts if your pet gets lost. the tracker also comes with a temperature sensor to alert you if your pet gets too hot or too cold. theres also an activity tracker to tell you how your pets day is. it gives you a percentage of its resting, lightly, moderately, or highly active. the iOS app however is very old. it hasn't been changed since 2012. so its not going to be optimized for larger screens like the iPhone 6. i think the 6.95 a month ( for 24 months ) is a very good deal. they say its unlimited tracking. if i were to buy a sim card for another tracker i would probably have to pay between $10 and $30 for a data plan and i would have to worry about the data cap. one thing i would like to see improved would be faster charging times.update 1okay the temperature sensor is not enabled yet. the 2 year old IOS app is being switched to "the whistle app" and when the switch over is complete , the temperature sensor will be activated.update 2the locate button on the base station can be easily pressed when you dock the tagg unit. this makes the light flash blue. making you think its downloading a software update. but it isn't.update 3i pressed the snooze button and took Rocco to the dog park. so i wouldn't get alerts. the activity did not update the whole time he was there. tagg says it may take 24 hours for it to sync. if you want to sync activity faster then plug it into its base station for a few minutes. i did that and i could see his activity levels at the dog park for that day.update 4the instructions say if you take your pet out for a walk, you press the snooze button. it will silence the tracker for 15 minutes so you won't get alerts. i pressed it once and we went to the dog park. for the whole 2 hours or so i was there, i didnt get any alerts sent to my phone to where he was. i didn't have to keep pressing the snooze. since the device was still turned on i was still able to locate and track rocco using the appupdate 5once registered to your cell phone number, you can retrieve alerts and send commands like "battery" , "track" , "locate" by sms text messaging to 52366 so you don't have to have a smart phone to track your pet
