BOOK REVIEW
Book Title: DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY WHISTLEBLOWER
JUSTICE OVER RACIAL DISCRIMINATION AND ETHICS VIOLATIONS IN A RIGHT TO WORK STATE
Authored By : DENNIS PATTERSON
Available from www.amazon.com Kindle Edition

This book is an excellent account of one man with 30 years experience working for the IDAHO NATIONAL LABORATORY (INL). Over the years Dennis Patterson has been recognized for his commitment to excellence and outstanding work performance. For the past 10 years he was an ETHICS OFFICER and Manager of the “EMPLOYEE CONCERNS PROGRAM” at the (INL) near Idaho Falls, Idaho.
BATTELLE ENERGY ALLIANCE (BEA) is the operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory.
The INL’S vision to become a world-class nuclear laboratory by 2015 would ensure continued growth in the area.
An employee came to Dennis Patterson with a problem that was within the scope of the ETHICS OFFICER’S job description. This was a situation that could have and should have been resolved in a day or two, with a few meetings between the appropriate personnel, and problem solved.
That would be too easy. Instead Dennis Patterson versus the INL (David vs Goliath) spent 4 years and thousands of dollars fighting a legal battle that ended with Dennis Prevailing and the employee with the initial problem getting his job back.
Dennis was doing his job as the Ethics Officer and soon He became the Bad Guy.

Here are a few quotes from the book:
“His (Dennis Patterson) job title was changed from Manager to Specialist along with a $2,000.00 Salary Reduction.”
October 16, 2006 “SUSPENSION WITHOUT PAY”
“The Guard took my badge, cell phone and the key to my office.

It is important that Patterson shares his experience because honest people with a conscience don't expect the degree of shameless lying that goes on. You get a taste of how bringing a Department of Energy Whistleblower case subjects a person to BEA's shameless lying while BEA has an open DOE budget to pay for their legal costs.

The book gives examples that help you understand why INL Ethics Offices, in general, are meaningless with regard to nuclear workers being threatened by management for not doing what management wants, which sometimes includes the coverup of safety problems. Anyone with the illusion that DOE is not in bed with its contractors should read this book.

I was fascinated reading about people I used to work with at the INL. Throughout his ordeal, Dennis Patterson never lost his faith in God. Honest, challenging writing about what really happened at that lab.

As a former employee of the INL, I have experienced first-hand the "good ol' boy system" in place at the laboratory. Harassment, intimidation, ostracization, and sabotage are just a few of the tactics used by upper management to keep "trouble-maker" employees in line. I have seen Arantza Zabala, Jodi, and the other "professionals" who are supposed to work to protect employee interests. Needless to say, they operate at a less than ethical level toward wronged employees when it comes to protecting the interests of BEA or whatever Prime Contractor happens to be at the helm of the INL.

This epic saga that Dennis Patterson endured ended fairly well. So many other cases don't. I applaud loudly Mr. Patterson for his courage, endurance, and faith in fighting the Corporate Monster that chews up and spits out so many people, leaving them with ruined careers and shattered lives.

I hope that BEA takes notice and works to remove the unethical individuals who worked to systematically isolate, humiliate, and bully Mr. Patterson. Their EEO/Employee Assistance policies have been nothing but lip service.

Dennis Patterson's account of his ordeal to recover his dignity, reputation and status is a must read for anyone that has ever worked for a large corporation. The injustices that he suffered while trying to fulfill the obligations and duties of his responsibilities are unbelievable. Senior management must have been asleep at the switch to let his case get that far and result in nothing but bad publicity for BEA.

The damage done to BEA's corporate image is unmeasurable and the message to their employees is sad. How could anyone complain about any real or imagined injustice at BEA and think that their grievance will be fairly adjudicated if it's believed that they persecute the message carriers and adjudicators whose duty it is to protect them?

Wow, one heck of a journey AND a good read!
(Great material for business school and engineering management case studies.)

As someone who has been unfairly fired in right to work states, I found this story inspiring that justice can win in the end. Department of Energy Whistleblower delivers a great tale and triumphant ending. Dennis Patterson is not only a great writer, but someone who would go to battle for any injustice.
