Book Title: DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY WHISTLEBLOWER
JUSTICE OVER RACIAL DISCRIMINATION AND ETHICS VIOLATIONS IN A RIGHT TO WORK STATE
Authored By : DENNIS PATTERSON
Available from www.amazon.com Kindle Edition
This book is an excellent account of one man with 30 years experience working for the IDAHO NATIONAL LABORATORY (INL). Over the years Dennis Patterson has been recognized for his commitment to excellence and outstanding work performance. For the past 10 years he was an ETHICS OFFICER and Manager of the “EMPLOYEE CONCERNS PROGRAM” at the (INL) near Idaho Falls, Idaho.
BATTELLE ENERGY ALLIANCE (BEA) is the operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory.
The INL’S vision to become a world-class nuclear laboratory by 2015 would ensure continued growth in the area.
An employee came to Dennis Patterson with a problem that was within the scope of the ETHICS OFFICER’S job description. This was a situation that could have and should have been resolved in a day or two, with a few meetings between the appropriate personnel, and problem solved.
That would be too easy. Instead Dennis Patterson versus the INL (David vs Goliath) spent 4 years and thousands of dollars fighting a legal battle that ended with Dennis Prevailing and the employee with the initial problem getting his job back.
Dennis was doing his job as the Ethics Officer and soon He became the Bad Guy.
Here are a few quotes from the book:
“His (Dennis Patterson) job title was changed from Manager to Specialist along with a $2,000.00 Salary Reduction.”
October 16, 2006 “SUSPENSION WITHOUT PAY”
“The Guard took my badge, cell phone and the key to my office.Read more ›
The book gives examples that help you understand why INL Ethics Offices, in general, are meaningless with regard to nuclear workers being threatened by management for not doing what management wants, which sometimes includes the coverup of safety problems. Anyone with the illusion that DOE is not in bed with its contractors should read this book.
This epic saga that Dennis Patterson endured ended fairly well. So many other cases don't. I applaud loudly Mr. Patterson for his courage, endurance, and faith in fighting the Corporate Monster that chews up and spits out so many people, leaving them with ruined careers and shattered lives.
I hope that BEA takes notice and works to remove the unethical individuals who worked to systematically isolate, humiliate, and bully Mr. Patterson. Their EEO/Employee Assistance policies have been nothing but lip service.
The damage done to BEA's corporate image is unmeasurable and the message to their employees is sad. How could anyone complain about any real or imagined injustice at BEA and think that their grievance will be fairly adjudicated if it's believed that they persecute the message carriers and adjudicators whose duty it is to protect them?
(Great material for business school and engineering management case studies.)
"People are people wherever you find them. And the number of advanced degrees someone has, has nothing to do with, whether or not they have judgment, or maturity, or perspective, or ethics."
~ Carly Fiorina (former HP CEO) on “Tough Choices”
