My personal experience is that my unit has functioned flawlessly over 2+ years of use. I have powered my laptop, chargers, mini-fridge, video camera, house lighting (in case of power outages) and even a water pump off of my 400w (800 surge) unit. I have used both the cigarette adapter and battery clips that came with it.

I'm writing this review mainly becasue I feel like the rating is skewed. One reviewer claimed he blew all the fuses in his 2012 Silverado because of this inverter, and gave it 1 star. He said none of the fuses were blown in the unit, so obviously the unit was at fault. However, the unit is rated for higher wattage than his cigarette adapter socket is. If you are using the cigarette adapter, you should not attempt to pull more than 150w off of ANY inverter. This has nothing to do with your inverter, and everything to do with the wiring in your car, which is not designed to handle the same load this inverter can. It is most likely that the reviewer was not aware of this limitation, and threw out a perfectly good inverter.

Another reviewer gave the unit 2 stars, after admitting that he had a bad alternator in an older vehicle (and it worked fine until his alternator went out).

Yet another gave 1 star because the minimum operating voltage is stated in the manual as 11v +/- 0.5 volts, which could mean the device might not run on 11.5 volts (or maybe 10.5). Well, your alternator should be putting out more than 14 volts when your car is running, and your battery, when charged, should be over 13. If your battery voltage drops below 11.5 volts at idle, you have bigger problems.

This device is exactly what I'd hoped it'd be. It allows me to have AC power for a multitude of devices including laptops, etc while on the go in the car. Be aware that when you first power it up, you'll get that electrical smell of burning transistors but it begins to fade with time. I'm well pleased with this devices output and performance. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to supply AC power in their vehicle. The USB is a slow trickle USB charge designed to not overcharge or burn out a device so it may not provide enough power for some items.

so far i have only charged my laptop from it, which was my main reason for purchase. the only bad thing so far is the first couple times i turned it on, it smelled very chemically strong, the smell went away by the 3-4 time used, but it can easily charge my laptop. it seems that it makes my audio system in my truck to stay on even when vehicle is off when ever it is plugged in, only happens when this is plugged in, but if i unplug the inverter everything goes back to normal. the blue fits my trucks scheme, comes with 2 ways to connect, either via direct connect to terminals of a battery or to a 12v plug inside vehicle.

I bought this Pro-400W inverter to replace an older unit that starting giving shocks and tripping the internal circuit breaker. I have this unit hard wired in the back of my truck just like my last inverter, which was also a Whistler that lasted for about 10-years with almost daily use charging batteries for my 18V cordless tools and occasionally running a Dremel tool or a drop light, but I don't know if this new unit is going to be capable of giving that kind of service life. This new 400-Watt inverter is physically a lot smaller than the old 300-Watt model PP300AC it replaced and is also made mostly of plastic compared to the old unit which was all metal. Like this new one, my old inverter was also a modified sine wave design, but I never had any issues with my batteries or chargers while using it. The manual says that the two internal ATC type automotive fuses in this Pro-400W unit are replaceable, but the blades of the fuses are actually soldered directly to the PC board, so that type of repair might be a little difficult for some people to accomplish. If you remove the four outer screws on the back panel where the fan is, you can fold the panel down and see the fuses there on the right side. Had I known about these things before purchasing, I probably would have gone with a more heavy duty unit, but bought this inverter based on both my previous positive experience with Whistler and because the rated size was compatible with my trucks existing hard wiring capacity, so I wouldn't have to deal with the time and expense of upgrading the wiring. So far anyway, this inverter is working well doing the same job that the old one did, so I will just have to wait and see if the durability will be as good as the old Whistler unit.

I'm a big fan of this device. It drove a 40" LED TV, as well as charging a phone so we could watch TV at a tailgate.

That said, when we got it, initially I thought it was broken. It immediately started throwing out beeps and lights, which indicated it wasn't getting enough power. I thought this was strange, and was getting ready to send it back to Amazon as I figured I got a bum unit. Well.. just because the car battery was so old, I had it tested. Sure enough, the car's battery was at death's door and needed to be replaced. I put a new battery in the car, and had no problems from that point on. Looking forward to using this inverter for many years to come.

One last thing - unless you're using a very small, very low power device, use the included alligator clips and hook it directly to your car's battery. Despite it being rated for 400 watts, cigarette lighters in cars only put out 150 watts max. It's a very quick way to blow a fuse.
