Produced the Whistler desktop scanner W S10 25 I live in a hard and difficult area.To receive transmissions from police Fire on a low band and purchasing this scanner. I found it to be excellent. Quality is good. I just pick up single strength very good. We'll recommend it for the money. I have in the past. Use different brands of scanners. And I found that Whistler is superb to all other brands will recommend miss scanner. If you listen to the lower frequencies, you will Find a very pleasant label to use very easy to understand and get a lot of enjoyment and pleasure out of a radio that produces and performs excellent. I must invite and I say to Whistler whistler corporation. Congratulations. You are now considered in my book's number one

My old Radio Shack scanner finally gave up the ghost, so I was looking for a simple, basic replacement. This unit does not disappoint.

First, I am in a rural area, so all scanner frequencies here are analog. Also, I have software (PSREdit) which has a database of all the frequencies I use... it hooked up perfectly with this scanner and uploaded the files without a problem. The cable I had from my Radio Shack unit worked fine! Also, I have a subscription from RadioFrequencies.com, which downloads its database to the PSREdit program, so there was no manual programming I needed to do.

There are 10 banks, with 30 channels each, so plenty of room for the 50 or so frequencies that I monitor. The sound is crisp and clear. There are pre-programmed channels for EMS/Police/Fire, but these were not really useful to me in my area. I would highly recommend you check RadioFrequencies.com for your area and get the local frequencies you need there, and program them in.

Finally, there is one minor issue, but not critical: My old Radio Shack scanner showed the description of the channel being received... this scanner does not. I sort of miss that; but since I setup banks for EMS, Fire, Police, etc., I can tell by which bank is lit where the call is originating. (Also, all calls always announce who they are at the onset of the message).

All in all, a solid unit for the price!

Got it delivered early yesterday overnight = Easy set up - played it all day into the night Great reception on all bands = not much activity up here however whatever I picked up came in loud & clear. Great reception on the FM & Weather bands. I highly recommend this radio as a first starter. Radio Shack & Lafayette had similar radios back in the day & it was long overdue for me to purchase a radio like this one & I'm glad I did. Once again I highly recommend this radio to anyone interested in listening in on public service bands Including Police - Fire - Air & Ham communications. Go for it!!

Arrived quickly and out of the box it's actually quite easy to program. One thing to know is that Whistler thinks they're doing you a favor by pre-programming the scanner with the most commonly used frequencies. Before I could enter my own frequencies I had to go through and delete all those unwanted frequencies. Once that was done, entering my own frequencies went pretty fast and easy. There is a brief video that you can watch where the president of Whistler shows you how to program it. it's real brief and fast moving but if you view it a time or two, you'll have it figured out. The accompanying manual is pretty helpful also. Another plus is that this scanner has a telescoping antenna that screws straight into the scanner but also has a BNC connection for an external antenna. I bought an external scanner antenna from Uniden and we live in a very mountainous wooded terrain and after installing the external antenna I'm able to receive a fire dept frequency that is 51 miles away and the sheriffs dept. which is further away than that but they employ the use of repeaters. All in all, I'm happy with this scanner. I'm a diehard Uniden fan but this unit was less expensive and performs well.

I have been traveling internationally and just got back. I opened the box and found the antenna was broke so there is no way the scanner will work. I am past the 30 day return so I guess I am out the $130.00.

I have been buying these and programming them on the side for customers in my business for years. It is a great, simple, analog scanner for anyone wanting to listen to what is happening. Remember that many agencies have all gone digital, so this scanner may not work at all, or limited on what you can hear for your area. Ask around before you buy. In my rural county, all entities are analog and not digital, and so it works great! Whistler makes a great product. Not a single problem out of every unit I have bought and sold.

Sadly, the scanner comes with 153 channels in the banks. They should have been listed and if you want to input them go ahead. Unfortunately, some channels "block" off other channels. It should still work fine, but to delete channels and possibly input them in other banks is slightly redundant. You can skip entire banks (shut them off or turn them on), but each bank might have a few good channels. It's for the pops, so he'll let me know if it picks up what his older scanner received. No serious problems so far.
