Playing with the themes of imagination and reality, the story was intelligently written, walking the line between supernatural horror and psychological suspense. The concept behind the faceless boy was particularly compelling, with chilling descriptions that created vivid images in the mind of the reader. Grounded in reality, these paranormal aspects felt plausible, adding to the unsettling nature of the story as whole.
The writing itself was strong with a clean style that flowed easily. Told over the course of a week, the suspense built slowly, moving from the normalcy of the daily life to the story's climax. The pacing was well balanced to keep the reader fully engaged. There were some light touches of humor within the narrative, which fit well with the tone of the story. The characters felt relateable and well developed.
For my personal reading tastes, the story could have gone to darker places. The tone was more optimistic than I would normally expect from the horror genre. The story was not overtly scary or gruesome. Yet, I still found myself completely pulled into the reading experience.
The story was inspired by the author's own son who also believed to have seen a faceless boy in his room. Knowing this story was grounded in a real child's experience added yet another layer of creepiness to the story.
This would be a good starting place for anyone looking to ease into the horror genre. I would recommend this novella to readers looking for a well written, memorable story full of suspense and mystery.
I accepted this novella from the author.
Trace Conger’s The White Boy is scary, creepy, and too good to be missed.
