note: I received an advanced readers' copy of this book from the AW group.
Kasey is the heroine of this tale of an apocalypse. She is first introduced to the reader in a sweet scene from her childhood. She is a free spirit who likes to wander. On this particular day she goes to the beach without her mother to build a sandcastle. There she encounters a stranger who gives her an amulet.
Fast forward to her as an eighteen year old. Her life changes when evil comes to Long Island. The rest of the book takes place in real time, over the course of thirty-six hours. To describe this as thrilling would be an understatement. Expect to be surprised, horrorstricken, and riveted.
Without disclosing any more of the plot, I want to add you will not be able to stop reading until you reach the conclusion. Then you’ll have to wait for the next installment because there is a cliffhanger. Fabulous book!
This is set in a world with which I was not familiar - called the 'Apocalypse Weird Universe'. I hasten to point out that you don't have to have read the others first (I did not) as the explanations contained in the book are clear and this series easily stands on its own. It is fast paced and although written for young adults it will be enjoyed by anyone who likes a bit of fantasy. (Of course, it is questionable at times if I am an adult, but likely don't classify as young any longer).
If your looking for an excellent way to while away a bit of time, then know that reading this book will fulfil that need. Tired of your 'normal' life and looking for some adventure without leaving home? Yep - this works for that too!
Against the backdrop of the sudden cataclysmic Apocalypse event that has struck worldwide and the ensuing death, destruction and scramble for survival, readers bear witness to the first steps in the shaping of one of the heroes destined to fight in the final battle, if she survives and endures the trials ahead, for young Kasey Byrne may be the one to summon the power of the White Dragon and win the elemental beast to the cause of goodness.
The action starts strong when the worldwide blindness event strikes, and the forces of evil target the nascent hero but seize Kasey's boyfriend by mistake, and she must gather allies amid the rioting and madness and save him.
While the story is very well-written and sheds some interesting light on the nature of the event and what the worldwide blindness really entails, I might not have been in the best mood to read it, having already read multiple accounts of the stunned struggle for survival in the initial days of the shift from normal reality to Apocalypse Weird, and I'm in more of a mood for something set a few months or years later, when survivors have settled into the business of surviving in the new reality. The next book promises to be a different pace and style, where Kasey undergoes her training and perhaps meets the White Dragon, and I may try that one at a later time. This doesn't take away from the quality of this book, and should the White Dragon be cannon and play a role in the saga to come, it will be a valuable addition indeed!
