This miniseries covers the reigns of Kings Edward IV and Richard III of England. It also covers the ascension to the English throne of Henry Tudor. It focuses on three women who were to have some influence. First, there is the beautiful Lancastrian widow and commoner, Elizabeth Woodville, who would secretly marry King Edward IV of the House of York. Then there is wealthy Margaret Beaufort, the religious fanatic who would stop at nothing to make her exiled son, Henry Tudor of the House of Lancaster, King of England. Last but not least is Anne Neville, obedient daughter of Warwick, known as the Kingmaker for his success in making his cousin, Edward IV, King of England. She would first marry Edward of Westminster, only son of the deposed mad King of England, Henry VI, and Margaret of Anjou. Widowed, she would later marry Richard, youngest brother of King Edward IV, who would later become King Richard III.
While some of the machinations of these women may strain credulity, it makes for a very entertaining television miniseries. Some of these machinations are based on historical fact, while some are not. This why it is historical fiction, with the operative word being "fiction". There is some nudity, which is gratuitous for the most part, but it is fairly minimal given the fact that this is a ten part miniseries. Those with an interest in this period of English history, or who simply enjoy interesting, well done historical fiction, will love this miniseries.
About 95% of the scenes are the same between the BBC cut and the Starz version - but not exactly. The US version definitely has slightly longer sex scenes - usually between Elizabeth & Edward, but also Anne Neville's unfortunate first marriage to Edward of Westminster (the old king's son) that is a bit more creepy then I recall. The only scene that I did not expect was between Richard III and... well, you'll have to finish the series for yourself. Just know that in the north of England today there's a bit of Yorkist sentiment that Richard Plantagenet, Duke of Gloucester, got a bad rap from history. Medieval battle could be bloody and brutal, but so was the struggle for the throne.
I love the lively backstories and rich characterizations for all the women in this series - Elizabeth, Jacquetta of Luxembourg, Isabel & Anne, even Margaret of Anjou. Not joking when I tell non-history buffs that it's the original Game of Thrones.
