One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed. --Tom Keogh

Review
SNOW WHITE: Even though her stepmother, the Queen, forces her to wear rags and work as a scullery maid, nothing can disguise Princess Snow Whites natural beauty and grace. In fact, the Magic Mirror declares her the fairest one of all! Shes also very neat and tidy (just ask the seven dwarfs), and encourages everyone to have good clean fun. With a song in her heart, she befriends everyone, even the animals of the forest! But what she wishes for most of all is true love.
THE QUEEN: With her black eyes, red lips and elegantly flowing robe, the Queen is considered the most beautiful person in the land. That is until her Magic Mirror informs her that there is someone even fairer, her own stepdaughter! When her jealousy gets the best of her, this evil witch uses dark magic to transform herself into an ugly old hag with a grotesque outside appearance that reflects the wickedness inside her heart.
DOC: Although he isn t officially the leader of the dwarfs, you can count on Doc to take charge when there s a big decision to be made. But when he gets excited, his mind works faster than his mouth and he bumbles words in a hilarious fashion, like when he wants his pals to search every nook and cranny but instead tells them to look in every cook an nanny! You can t help but love him for his cheery face, sparkling eyes and unfailing politeness. Plus, hes an excellent yodeler!
SNEEZY: With a Heigh Ho! and an Ah-choo!, Sneezy faithfully heads off to work every morning in the diamond and ruby mines with the other six dwarfs. Like his friends, he works hard, then joins in the merriment at home, dancing and singing, at the end of each day. Be extra careful about kicking up any dust, though if you hear him start to sniffle, pass a hankie! His sneezes are so powerful, they can blast you across the room!
GRUMPY: Take a bite of a sour lemon and look at your face in a mirror: You probably have a scrunched-up expression just like Grumpys! This dwarf is known for being rough and gruff, for grumbling and complaining, for putting up a fight when he s told to wash up. Ah, but underneath that stern exterior, theres a heart of gold. He s loyal to his friends, he s quick to defend the people he loves and he plays the organ like a pro!
HAPPY: If you re ever feeling blue, there is one dwarf who can show you that the glass is always half full and the grass is greenest right where you are standing. Happy lives up to his name with his cheerful nature and genuine, heartwarming smile. Theres a twinkle in his eye and a spring in his step, and his whole jolly being seems to just glow with joy. Not even a wicked old witch can dampen this guys good spirits!
BASHFUL: Sweet Bashful is a true sentimentalist who loves a good love story. Maybe that s why he isn t frightened like the others when he first meets Snow White, who he thinks looks like an angel. Oh, but at heart he is incredibly shy, and whenever she s around, he can t help but blush, twist his beard into knots, and bat his eyelashes. And ask him to join in the yodeling, and he immediately dissolves into nervous giggles. You just want to hug him!
SLEEPY: Have you ever noticed that yawns can be contagious? Well, hang around with Sleepy for a while and you might begin to feel just a wee bit...well, sleepy! This dwarf knows that there is nothing quite as satisfying as a good long nap in his comfy, dwarf-sized bed, but he also has a talent for being able to fall asleep anywhere at any time! While his thunderous snores won t wake him from one of his deep snoozes, start a party with good friends and hell be there.
DOPEY: Dopey is a scene-stealer! Playful, mischievous and totally adorable, the littlest dwarf somehow manages to get in the middle of everything. And whats most amazing is he does it without using words! --Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment

Their is a debate against the "one-note" princesses of early Disney and the new remake is a big catalyst for that. However, Snow White stands on her own and while the story is simplistic - its the technical wizardry and the pure, artistic heart and talent on display that still resonates to this day with viewers.
I waited for a good couple years to see this again since I only vaguely remembered parts I saw during childhood, as I knew the 4K release would be spectacular and Disney did not disappoint luckily. The lush HDR and the crisp detail that captures some film grain make this a totally different experience just comparing to stills of the regular Blu Ray, especially color wise. The enhanced details do lead to some of the artistic camera tricks appearing a bit warbly and shaky at certain times but not a lot and its never too distracting.
As for the heart of the film itself, its still golden. Snow White isn't as complicated as the more modern protagonists of Disney or Pixar films, but she doesn't have to be. The studio vowed not to bog down the film with heavy themes in order to focus on expressive animation techniques, and in the case of the Dwarves, absolute mastery was captured by the animators for their first gargantuan feature. They steal the show. I really hope Disney continues to release 4K remasters of their older features, Bambi and Pinocchio especially I'm holding out for.
While extensive use of DNR and image manipulation last time looked okay for a film like this, we now get what the animators had in mind. Colors are a bit subdued, cooler, and the image is slightly darker. But the UHD brings it all to amazing life with HDR and proper restoration work and mastering. The sequences with the dwarves now look lavish and authentic to the period. The animation is startling and detailed despite being so old.
Disney finally seems to have went back to work to actually give us the original elements as best they can. After these first two films, I have high hopes for the DNR disasters like The Sword in the Stone and others. These films look SO much better than they ever have. Very thankful for the change in direction.
The slipcover is also quite beautiful, and I am glad they got rid of the tech slash on all the covers they were using for a bit. This release looks much better than the dreadful steelbooks they have out from a packaging standpoint. Matte cover with foiled gloss. A little different than Cinderella but very well done.
Well the Queen finds out from the Magic Mirror that the Huntsman did not do his job and as the old saying goes: "if you want something done right then do it yourself". The Queen turns herself into an old Peddler and creates a poison apple that will make Snow White take one long nap. The Queen, now an old hag, finds Snow White and tricks her into taking a bite out of the apple and Snow White is now in snooze land. The animals of the forest rush to warn the Seven Dwarfs and it is Grumpy that leads the charge to save Snow White. The Dwarfs chase and traps the Queen to a mountain cliff. The Queen tries to loosen a boulder to kill the Dwarfs, but a bolt of lightning strikes the cliff and she fall to her death; and you the folks out there already knows the ending to the story.
The only thing I did not like was the extra DVD that came along with the movie. The case itself is thicker then your usual DVD case. The information was bit overkill and Disney could have just done a one hour documentary instead of all the details listed below. Also what is not included in this special two DVD set are movie preview for which I don't mind at all. Barring the negativity about the second DVD, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a great movie to own and gets an AAAAA+++++.
