Throughout the last few books in each series, due to so much going on, there are a lot of break offs to other characters and what they are doing. This is no big deal for someone who's read all of the books. We already know who is who and are now used to this style. Even so, as a veteran reader of Ms.Suttle, I still had a hard time getting as involved in this book as with all of her others.
I don't want to spoil anything for someone who hasn't read the book yet, but I felt that in this book, Quinn had backtracked emotionally to the point where she was almost as emotionally broken as before she came to the Avii in the first place. Yes she had a huge trauma, but she had grown so much before, I was very disappointed in how introverted she became.
Zaria, on the other hand, is stil Corinne down to her soul. She's still emotionally vulnerable, but is still able to pick herself up by her boot straps to get the job done, no matter the cost to herself. I love how she will lean on her mates when she needs to, how her mates know when she needs to be alone, and how whe doesn't do pity parties and whine in internal dialogues. She has a universe size heart and isn't afraid to sacrifice everthing she has to protect them.
Ilya was still an a** to Zaria all because he had some self esteem issues and the typical alpha male syndrome. For me, that Alpha male thing only works if your heart's in the right place.
Justis, poor Justis, was stuck in the middle of so many difficult situations, I was amazed he didn't start tearing his hair out or start molting prematurely. However, when it came down to it, he showed his true colors and got his priorities straight.
It is always in times of great adversity that you find your true alies, your true friends, your true family. For Quinn, they've been there with her for quite some time, she just didn't understand it until now. All she ever wanted was to be loved and accepted for who and what she was.
So, will there be a HEA??? You'll have to read the book to find out
