Product Description

Tongue and groove joints have been used to strengthen panels since the dawn of woodworking. Using a matched set of router bits is the easy way to make one that fits. This set made in the U.S.A. by Whiteside works on material from 1/2" to 1-1/4" thick. These cutters are only available in 1/2" shank and should be used in a router table. It's also recommended that you use a fence, aligned flush with the ball bearing for the smoothest, gap free joint. If guiding strictly with the ball bearing, any edge imperfections will telegraph to the joint. A fence will smooth out the travel over those imperfections.

Top Customer Reviews

I do quite a bit of routing and have owned many different brands of bits. I tried for a while getting away with the cheap brands or the huge boxes of assorted bits at bargain prices. This can often be deceiving, especially to new woodworkers that rely on reviews. A cheap bit will probably cut really well the fist few times you use it. As it gets dull, you will start to notice burning, chipping, rough edges, and maybe even a little chatter. I learned my lesson and am now augmenting my collection of bargain bits with Whiteside. This particular bit is one I use quite often. It cuts exceptionally well. Compared to a craftsman/Ryobi, MLCS, Diablo, etc. bit you will see why before you even take it to wood. There is A LOT of carbide on this bit. The brazing is top notch as well - no voids to be found anywhere. With frequent cleanings, this bit will cut exceptionally well for quite some time. In addition because of the high quality carbide used, it can be resharpened when dull. If you look around online, you will find places that resharpen 2 flute router bits for around $5. That is a lot cheaper than tossing it in favor of a new one.

Why Whiteside? There are a lot of premium bit manufacturers, but out of all the ones I have tried, (Amana, Infinity, Freud Industrial, CMT), whiteside is the most consistent with quality of materials/construction, and quality of cut. In addition they are often the lowest price.

Yes premium router bits seem expensive. You will find out in the long run that they really aren't. If you do a good amount of woodworking, save yourself the trouble of investing in large sets of cheap bits. Buy whiteside bits in the profiles you use most often instead. I have never been disappointed in a whiteside product. I cannot say the same about any other brand.

I have tried many different manufactures over the years: Freud, Amana, Bosch .. and cheapies like sears. While some of the better names do make very good bits, I found the Whiteside superior. Right out of the box they are very sharp, excellent quality carbide (and excellent overall quality), stay sharper longer, no chatter and burn marks are very rare. Also unlike some bits the marking (on the ½ inch shanks is easy to read). If they get mixed up (happens to me all the time despite my organized storage system) it is very easy to see which is the ¾ vs. 23/32 straight bit. It is marked with the PN so you do need to look it up. The may be a little more expensive but it is definitely worth it. If you haven't tried Whiteside I encourage you to try them and put it through its paces. You might not notice a difference against one of the better brands, but over time I bet you too will be hooked.

The bit broke soon after using it. The metal ring (the piece around the bearing) came loose and started fluttering around and around. I worked with the bit a little more and it started to damage my project so I stopped. I was using the bit to buzz around a template into a second piece of wood to duplicate the first template. I set the depth so that the bit rode the first piece of wood and cut the second one below it. I hate writing bad reviews but I'm not sure what to do. Someone thought that the speed on my router might have been too fast.

Again...not a lot to say. It works, it's sharp and stays sharp even if used on very hard woods. Most of my other bits are great for soft wood or even in hardwood for the first few times. Whiteside bits come with a sharper edge and keep that edge for much longer than most brands. Don't expect fancy packaging, But, if you want a bit that does the job, this will do.
