This is an amazing book on colonials, as it not only lists examples but pretty much all known varieties within each series. For example, the Redbook lists examples and certain types, and for colonial series like Connecticut coppers, well, I believe all known varieties have been covered. Also, as far as I know, all recently discovered varieties within each series has been mentioned. The photographs help a lot, and make this more of an attribution guide. Rarity ratings are pretty accurate. I love QDB's works, and have almost everything he has written on coins. This is a great book not only for the novice numismatist, but also for the advanced collector. Before this book, the closest thing was Walter Breen's Encyclopedia, which was a fantastic reference for its time. This just takes that book and pretty much completes much of what Walter was not able to include. So, why only four stars. Well, the biggest irritation is Dave's use of a "new" rarity rating. It is completely unnecessary, and so backwards compared to what we currently use in almost all series, that it only serves to confuse. I have strong doubts that it will catch on. Lastly, the prices for this are somewhat useless, because often times they are way off, and for the most part, it seems useless to add a price guide to something that really requires auction records as well as description to value. For example, the grade of a colonial coin is not the only (and in some cases not even the most important) determining factor. Color and surface quality can be equally important, so the price guide is really superfluous. This is a massive work, and really is a must to any collectors library.

When a colleague introduced me to colonials, they really caught my attention. So much that I considered purchasing the coins offered. TO MY POINT: Having no prior experience in this area of numismatics, acquiring such coins, without an idea of type, value, rarity or mintage could have turned into a dangerous and expensive venture. Therefore I needed help. This book was the answer!!!! Not only does Mr. Bowers list ALL colonials and give a round about value, he also lists rarity and gives estimated numbers known; for each variety of each coin!! This really helped me get a better grasp of the coins I was looking at. Also, with the MANY varieties of colonials, he offers a system of matching the obverse and reverse of all coins, with great quality color pictures and then lists the "type" of variety within that series it may be. Although I was slightly confused at first, after the first few days of doing this, I had it down!

Also, as a bonus, the chapters on the history behind colonials; from the ins and outs of minting to those involved in starting coinage in this country and much more, had not only added to my intrigue but also my knowledge!!

Lastly, one valuable tip. Mr. Bowers states that money values listed are very approximate and can be quite different now, verses when the book was published (which I believe was 2008.) I have found that going on major auction sites, (Heritage, Stacks & Bowers) to check current prices realized for the colonials I have an interest in, has helped tremendously to narrow that gap. Dave has done it again! The most comprehensive source for the vast variations of colonial coins, in particular those minted by a few of the new states. The descriptions are clear and the photos are helpful. Yes, the photos would be slightly more helpful if larger, but that would necessitate 3 or more volumes. it seems that with this volume there is little need to review the previously published sources, such as Sheldon, etc.

I have not read the whole book yet.

A good guide but it seems that they forgot about the Dutch. New York was New Amsterdam. I collect 2 Stuivers a Dutch dime type coin made of one gram of silver. There is not even a mention. Perhaps the authors could read "Island at the center of the Earth". It is about Manhattan before it became New York. Too bad they neglected this well distributed and locally used colonial coin the Dutch 2 Stuivers.

These Dutch Stuivers are very collectable and affordable. The authors spend too much time on rare coins worth 10,000 to 50,000. There are descriptions of single coins. Hardly collectable. But neglected many affordable coins like the 2 Stuivers, the 6 Stuivers, or the VOC penny. What happened?

When you buy the second edition, stand it up on end, open at 40 degrees, and inject elmers glue down the gap in the spine. Work the glue down with a wire or similar device. Close it and work out the excess glue carefully. Let it sit for 24 hrs....it's worth the trouble. This binding is garbage.
