The biggest issue I have is that I was not able to use the wheels without the frame looking like it was going to fall over or snap off. It was not until I placed 50 pairs of shoes on the rack and then tried to roll it across the room, that I found this out. With 50 pairs of shoes, the rack gets heavy and frame cannot handle all the weight. Even without shoes, the rack can sway sideways. Because the wheels can go in different directions when moving the rack, it can impact how the weight is distributed at the base. For example, if all four wheels are directly under the base, it's OK; but if the wheel spins so that it is sticking out, then the weight distribution is uneven. Also, when pulling on one side of the rack (with wheels), the frame did not stay vertical - I thought it was going to snap off the base! I really wanted to use the wheels but in the end I removed them. The rack still sways sideways but having the base sit on the floor helps keep it level. I may try to stick some of those furniture moving pads on the bottom of the base to help me slide the rack to where I want it.
Other cons is that the row spacing is only 4 inches. This means that it won't fit wedges, boots, platforms, or really high heels. While you may be able to get 4 inch heels it sit on the row, the heel hangs off the back rod. Since there is not a lot of space between the rows, the heel ends up getting caught in the shoe of the row below. You end up having to maneuver the shoes to get them out. You can skip a row to allow for more spacing (only install rods every other row), but then it no longer holds 50 pairs of shoes. Attached are some pictures of how the heels hang off the back rod - you can see how some heels are in the shoe below. Another picture shows how it works if you alternate rows, doing a row of slip-ons and sling backs underneath so the heels don't get caught.
Overall, this is a decent rack considering the limited selection of shoe racks that can hold 50 pairs of shoes. I am still glad I purchased it.
This chrome shoe tower by Whitmore was the answer! Everything is metallic and you securely screw down the horizontal bars on either side to the vertical bars. At the bottom, it has wheels to help you move around. An added bonus is that the horizontal bars where your shoes rest, have a somewhat rough surface to increase friction, thus, your shoes stay in place!
I love it. Not a single complaint. Oh yeah, and it holds a ton of shoes too!
I love the wheels and the bars have a black strip (made of God knows what) that prevents the shoes from falling even when your moving this thing from room to room. (I moved it all over the house just to see if any shoes slipped and they did not.) I also loved how easy it was to put together. I usually call dad for this kind of things but I was able to put it all together real fast. Seriously, if I canput it together ANYONE can! Overall I am really happy about this purchase and have shown it off to every friend and family member to the point were I think they may be a little sick and tired of listening to me yapping about how great this is.
