Great little OTD towel rack, organizer

I wasn’t sure that the Whitmor over-the-door towel rack was for me but boy, was I wrong! What a great, space-saving organizer it turned out to be! Bought it for bathroom guest towels, but it could be used in a kitchen or laundry area, too. It doesn’t hang a little lopsided, jiggle, or stick out too much like many over-the-door products. The mounting hangers fit snugly over the door, so the door closes easily even with the rack on it.

The rack has four bars. Just like the product photo shows, the bars are thin. They can handle regular-size bath towels or two hand (or dish) towels. The bars aren’t heavy-weight, so wouldn’t suggest this rack for oversized bath sheets or bulky velour towels.

It took less than 10 minutes to put it together and place it on a door. So easy, even a third-grader could do it. The only negative is that the top two bars aren’t easily reachable for kids or shorter adults, since the rack frame doesn’t telescope. But for less than $15 and only occasional use by guests, it’s not an issue. Am giving this space-saver a 5 out of 5 stars. It’s a great value. For those who want more quality, they should be willing to spend more bucks.

I just received this and put it together, and it's honestly crap. I'm not a handy person, but I am really good at putting things together (sounds contradictory, but I promise it's not). First, the assembly isn't hard, isn't terribly simple with just two hands. I kept thinking I was doing it wrong because it wasn't as steady as I expected. I kept going - what the heck REALLY holds the two middle bars in place - oh, nothing. They just swing downwards... hm, not what I wanted.
There's an option to mount it to the door (versus the over the door hanging) but I'm renting so I don't want to do that. Still, I think that's a nice additional "feature".

I got it put together, and I think it would take Hercules to screw in the only 2 screws actually required. I'm not a weakling, but I couldn't get them in and gave up trying before I stripped them both. Then I wondered, what keeps that metal part upright (the part that hangs over the door). Oh, nothing. You take down the rack and it just flops down. Not ideal, to me, at least, as it doesn't feel as stable and sturdy. I hung it over the door and it's ok. The bottom part doesn't touch the door which I expected it would to give me more stability. It is a little wider than I thought it'd be, but I like that. The size itself is right, but it just has a sort of cheap, flimsy feel to it which I wasn't expecting. I'm actually a little worried it's going to just fall apart on the door now that I've hung two towel on it.

I'll update if something crazy like that happens.

I gave it three stars because right now, it's doing it's job, but I think it's flimsy and cheap. I'd recommend paying a little more, get something a bit better. I wish I'd done that.

I have tightened down the hex nuts with a pipe wrench, and they're too short to push up against the tubing and keep those two bars stationary tight. It's wobbly. Replacing with some normal nuts when I go to the hardware store. Maybe put some plastic caps over the end of the bolts, since the chrome nuts would stick out like a sore thumb.

They didn't drill the holes for the screws at the top of the piping on either end. This is what keeps the bars from sliding out from the bracket that hangs on the door. Will have to either drill a small hole or use a center punch to get started.

So, overall... Buy some thin steel conduit, cut up some coat hangers, and make your own! It'll be better than this Piece Of Steel.

CONS:
- the top and bottom brackets are held at 90 degrees by a little notch of metal. I give it 2 weeks before it breaks and all four towels can hang on each other.
- unless you have double sided tape to hold the bottom contact points, this thing is going to wobble side to side, bang/clang when you open/close the door which is made WORSE by the fact that the top points can't even make contact with the door.
- only the top and bottom can be adjusted meaning that this would be good for... face clothes because anything else will touch the other one.
- good luck tightening the nuts with out scratching the incredibly thin vinyl covering and not scratching it. Then it will rust cuz... it's in a bathroom.

TLDR: loud, poorly designed, do not buy
