I'll begin with this disclosure; Don is my brother. However, that has no influence on my opinion of his writing. I would have endorsed this book if Don happened to be a complete stranger.
Notice from the title that this book is a collection of essays. Some, but not all, are about Donald Trump. All the essays were written between 2013 and 2016 and all are about contemporary issues from a conservative or libertarian standpoint.
These essays are from Don's Obama Timeline, which Don has maintained since Obama became a presidential candidate. Don's timeline is more detailed and contains more references than my doctoral dissertation.
Donald Trump won the election, so why should you read these essays now? It is because the issues are still so important. Don writes about how the federal government has far exceeded the intentions of the founding fathers. Early in the book Don writes, "The federal government's purpose is only to address those functions the states cannot readily perform on their own. . . ." He does on to say, "But leftists seem unable to comprehend that many government functions do not, in fact, need to be government functions." Those two sentences encapsulate the major differences in thought between the political left and right in this country.
Don has a thorough understanding of economics, and he is able to explain issues such as the minimum wage in terms that anyone can understand even if they have never taken a course in economics. (One of the failures of our public education system is that our high school graduates have not been taught basic economic concepts).
Don has a sense of humor that is apparent in many of the essays. Don includes several song parodies such as "Mr. Sanders," a song about Bernie Sanders that can be sung to the tune of "Mr. Sandman." My favorite is possibly "The Time They Are Not Changing," about the New York Times and set to a Bob Dylan song from the 1960's.
Writing of how it was likely Trump would win the election, in his essay dated December 10, 2015, Don wrote: "The more the talking head political pundits insult the Trump supporters, the more supporters he gains." Most of us endured the insults silently, but we got our revenge on Election Day.
Don concludes that the pundits see everything from a Democrat- or Republican-strategy perspective. Trump attracted huge crowds because he ran as an American. I will leave you with one final thought to encourage you to purchase this book. We are not engaged in a political war, we are engaged in a cultural war. The war did not end when the election results were announced, it will continue throughout Trump's term as President. You need to decide which side you will be on as the fight proceeds, and this book will give you some valuable insight into the issues.
