Product Description

George Segal, Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Morley top the bill of fare in this food- and fun-filled mystery garnished with wit. Segal plays a glib fast-food tycoon and Bisset is his ex-wife, a pastry chef who may become the last course in an enigmatic killer's banquet of death. Morley has a tasty field day as an acerbic gourmet magazine publisher whose cascading series of chins and stomachs bear witness to his love of fine dining. But the mogul's doctors have ordered him to give up his favorite dishes -- and one by one the chefs who create those dishes are slain in the manner of their specialties. Phillipe Noiret, Jean-Pierre Cassel and Jean Rochefort give delicious support, as does a mouth-watering array of wild mushrooms, plump pigeons, shiny artichokes, rich chocolate and more gastronimical delights. Dig in!

Great movie, decent quality in this DVD edition

Great movie, decent quality in this DVD edition
I watched this movie over 20 years ago, and had been wanting to enjoy it again. Netflix and Amazon don't carry it, so a hard copy was the only option. That said, the reviews discouraged me from buying it every time (terrible quality, looks like it was recorded in the theater, looks like it was copied from an old vhs tape). I'm happy I finally took the plunge. My expectations were not high, but they were exceeded!Image quality is fine. Every now again you get a scratch but exactly what you'd expect from a non digitally remastered version. Jacqueline Bisset is appropriately hazy in the glamor shots. :)Sound is a little muffled, but mostly ok. Unfortunately there are no subtitles so those hard of hearing may struggle with some scenes.

"Smell-o-vision" should have been invented specifically for this film. The food looked mouthwatering and probably smelled heavenly. The plot was amusing, the casting was perfect and the acting was, not perfect, but FUN! Jacqueline Bisset plays Natasha, the world's best pastry chef, who starts off the film by being kidnapped, seemingly is followed by murder wherever she happens to go. Ms. Bisset seems to be the only main character in this film that plays her role straight, rather than humorously. Her portrayal of actual cooking was fairly minimal, but she carried it off quite well, and, to be truthful, she is rather easy on the eyes. George Segal, as Robbie, her fast-food restaurant mogul ex-husband, just chews up the scenery in his zeal to win her back, while still pursuing his business enterprises which she dispises. Segal's portrayal jumps manically from farcical to romantic to detective drama with reckless abandon, and was a lot of fun to watch. The film never shows whether he ever made it to Brussels. As for Robert Morley, he is just supberb. I especially enjoyed the very witty and very well-scripted interplay between his character, Max, and Robbie, whom Max dispises. Morley's rendition of the pompous, over-indulgent, overbearing gourmet food magazine publisher who was being forced to go on a diet, was was a delight to behold. Overall, this movie was F-U-N FUN, from beginning to end. Watch it more than once and you'll catch additional nuances you missed in the first viewing, the essence of a great film.

A new gem from the Warner Brothers Archive Collection, this is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. An "old school" whodunit filmed in some of Europe's best restaurants. Worth viewing just to see Robert Morley play Maximilian Vandevere, the disdainful and pretentious editor of Epicurious Magazine. The movie portrays the trouble that begins when Max's physician insists that he start a life-saving diet to lose one half of his body weight...just as Max has hired two of his favorite chefs to prepare a dinner for the queen of England. Something mysterious starts happening related to one of his magazine articles entitled, "The World's Most Fabulous Meal"; murder ensues, and chefs are killed in the manner in which they prepare their signature dishes. Max takes you on a tour of Europe while blasting his quippy criticisms at everything and everyone in sight. This is a MUST SEE - filmed in 1978 (previously only available on VHS).

This has always been on of my favorite movies. Jackie Bissett is absolutely gorgeous in it, George Segal does a scene in a vegetarian restaurant that you will never forget and Robert Morley plays the overweight food magazine snob. I will never forget his role as the leader of a ragtag group of British character actors in, "Mike Mine Mink." Even the music is memorable as the score was written by Henry Mancini. I am really happy that the film has been re-mastered and looks just fine. I think I will watch it again tonight!!

As Dr. Michael Lim, The Travelling Gourmet, I have dined and tasted fine wines all over the world. I love this movie because of its humour, attention to detail and great food. Jacqueline Bisset is the most voluptuous Chef ever, although I did know a blonde Chef of wondefully statuesque proportions, and I am not referring to her Bombe Alaska. Great story, bizarre but believable. This is not a high brow movie for arrogant and pompous people but one for those who love life and have that joie de vivre that only the truly secure can ever appreciate. If Jacqueline Bisset can cook as good as she looks in this movie, she can fry my Bratwurst, grill my Schweinshaxe and flambe my Bananas Foster any time! George Segal, the Canadian actor is wonderful as the straight man, and it is obvious that all the actors are having a hell of a time on the set of this movie. Robert Morley, the gargantuan actor is very funny too as the stiff, upper lipped Englishman. One my favourite restaurants is a star in this movie. It is the regal la Tour d'Argent overlooking the Seine in Paris, the City of Light. I love to go there for the Duck a la Tour d'Argent and to see my old friend, Claude Terrail, the Directeur. A movie for gourmets, gourmands and food lovers with a good sense of humour. See it and then eat a large banana split with lashings of strawberry sauce & chocolate sauce and be happy you are alive. Guten Appetit!!! By Dr. Michael Lim The Travelling Gourmet

Anyone who has seen this movie will agree that it is a thoroughly entertaining clever diversion. Robert Morley is simply fantastic...with the exception of the vapid performances of Jacqueline Bisset and George Segal (how in the world could we have ever thought that George Segal was leading man material crossed my mind several times until I realized that this was the same era that placed Elliot Gould as a Hollywood stud) the cast supports the film in great style. As for the vendor and purchasing experience? I would order again without hesitation. Shipping was speedy, the goods were well packed, is there anything more that we need when ordering from an Amazon vendor?

Hi, I have been really busy lately and I have that DVD here sitting around. I was disappointed that this DVD player does not have Closed Captioned and I wonder how or who do I get help to get it to Closed Captioned ? The reason I bought it was because back then my dad and I went to the Theatres I think it was in the 1970 where the closed captioned was not available. Fast forward to today and everything is now have Closed captioned... I am not upset or anything but I would like to get this movie to have a closed captioned ?

5.0 out of 5 stars Wer den Film liebt...

Also, ganz klare Kaufempfehlung hierfür!!!
