Editorial Reviews

Review

Recommended. (CHOICE, January 2010)

If any area of government is in great need of 'change' today, it is public land management. It is failing economically and environmentally. Holly Fretwell offers here a valuable diagnosis of public land problems and a set of possible solutions that should be required reading for the Obama administration. (Robert H. Nelson, School of Public Policy, University of Maryland)

A very well formulated book by Holly Lippke Fretwell whose resume includes a lot of work on federal lands and how they are managed and the debate on liquidation of the federal estate, and how they could be better managed. I found her rationale to be quite logical and easy to follow, but I found her to be lacking critical pieces of information, particularly related to ecological and biological management for which the federal lands are critical (e.g. habitat fragmentation isn't thoroughly explored).

I felt that this book may be biased, and that a companion book would go well with it that argues against liquidation and argues on behalf of the current scheme wherein user fees subsidize management, but that it is in the Public's interest to keep the lands cheap to use, subsidized by taxes, so that we continue to get the "greatest good for the greatest number."
