Leonardo da Vinci was a gifted painter, talented musician, and dedicated scientist and inventor, designing flying machines, submarines, and even helicopters.  Yet he had a hard time finishing things, a problem anyone can relate to.  Only thirteen paintings are known to be his; as for the illustrated encyclopedia he intended to create, all that he left were thousands of disorganized notebook pages.  Here is an accessible portrait of a fascinating man who lived at a fascinating time—Italy during the Renaissance.

These "who are books" are a great way to get young readers excited about reading and learning about historical figures at the same time. They also open the door to discuss other things occurring at the same time (ie the powerful families at the time, the type of art created during this time etc...). My granddaughter loved reading this (she is 7) and I actually learned a few things myself (although no one was more surprised about this then myself ha). I would highly recommend this book

I really like this book. It's easy to read and full of details. The information on Leonardo is interesting for kids as well as adults. The art work along the way is great too to keep the history interesting. The book is made to understand Leonardo from his loveless childhood to his self views of failing as an adult. I felt the story motivates and also encourages children to know that failure often means a way to success and to explore and do what you love, is a life worth living.

We bought this book for our son to be able to use it for a book report. He was able read the whole thing within a few days of diligent reading. (Parents were able to read it too so we could ask him questions.)
He was able to do a written book report and n an oral report. The teacher sent his oral report was the best in the class.

My 8 year old loves these books so much, we’ve worked most of our homeschooling around them. It’s very common for boys to be more interested in non-fiction titles so I’m very happy to have these books for him. They are a very quick read so he averages two a day but he’s also a bookworm. We have our own little library of this series at home and can’t wait for more titles!

My 12-year-old hates reading on his own with a passion. So when he had to do a biogragphy on Leonardo for school, we both dreaded the process. He got a book from the school library and tried to wade through it, but he wasn't getting much usable information out of it because it was too long and complicated. I ordered this book four days before his assignment was due as a last desperate measure. Boy were we glad I did! This book was wonderful for my reluctant reader. It was informative but not overwhelming for a child who doesn't like to read. The basic information on Leonardo was enhanced with illustrations, timelines and information boxes on the Renaissance. I would highly recommend this book.

I used this book for students to study a person in history to write a report on. This was for a 4th grade classroom. Each student read the novel on their own and filled out a novel study that I created for non-fiction books. Students were able to follow the book with ease and understand what they were reading. There were several pictures to aid in understanding. There is also a timeline that helps students understand the timeline of events as they read. Very great resource.

Got this for quick biography on him for 7th grade art docent . Quick read, good info, fun style, perfect. It was great also to show kids that even geniuses like Leonardo do have big humiliating failures and that just normal and that life goes on. Also like the childhood from "broken" family, helping to show kids that it is not kids who have it all easy who succeed, it's your own drive.

I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.
