Educate Yourself First

I did not know until way after purchasing that you need to buy a separate container with a special terra cotta sugar disk to keep the sugar soft. So I have unopened packages of what WAS Organic Brown Sugar, and what is now an Organic Brown Cinderblock.
This is personal error, but it does blow my mind that the unopened packaging does nothing to preserve the sugar. Like my title says, educate yourself first. It's great sugar and a good company, but personally I don't have the money or space currently to buy special containers and preservational items for sugar.

I ordered 10 bags of this product from Amazon Prime Pantry. My family makes pumpkin bread for my husband's clients every year for thanksgiving. I have used this product before only I purchased it in a bulk bag from Costco. I knew the product well and based on past experiences did not anticipate any problems. Unfortunately, we did not have a positive experience with the smaller 16 oz bags. We found numerous clumps of molasses and sugar in all the bags. See the picture. I am sad that this was my experience with a previously good product. I do hope the company reaches out to me and seeks to provide a solution. 10 pounds of poor quality brown sugar is a loss.

Fabulous Brown Sugar For Baking

I am an avid baker and use organic products as much as possible. After trying Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Light Brown Sugar I will never to back to a national grocery store brand.

I really like the consistency of this sugar. The granular size is larger than other national grocery store brown sugars. The sugar pieces spoon out in a more separated fashion and are not as finely clumped together as national grocery store brown sugars. I first tried this in my chocolate chip cookie recipe with fantastic results. The batter mixed beautiful, cookies baked deliciously moist.

This sugar is a bit more expensive, but it is organic and baking results are worth the price. You'll notice the difference!

I love love love the smell of brown sugar, so when I ordered this and opened it up, that's kind of what I was expecting. It doesn't smell bad - but it doesn't smell like the brown sugar I've been used to all these years - as my kids put it, it smells like raisins :-) While it isn't a bad smell, I was just surprised at first because it was different than what I was expecting. I was curious if it would change the taste of any of the recipes I use it in, but so far it hasn't at all. The big test will be when I use it to make Pioneer Woman's caramel sauce recipe - if the taste of that recipe (which is, in large part, brown sugar) stays the same, then I am sold! Either way, this is the brand I will use for the majority of my cooking from now because it is organic. Also, I am happy to report that all 6 bags arrived very fresh and soft, with no hard lumps at all!

UPDATE 4/18/14: Just tried this brown sugar in the caramel sauce recipe I mentioned above and it turned out PERFECT! No different taste at all, this is the brand I will continue to use!

I'm happy with this organic brown sugar. The price is high on Amazon, unfortunately, our local grocery stores have been out of organic brown sugar for awhile, they seem to have switched to organic coconut sugar. Unfortunately, coconut sugar is fructose and I don't want fructose.

But this is perfect for my purpose. Yes, I'll order it again. And I have to compliment the folks who packed and shipped. It's obvious that they took care to make sure it was packed securely. I appreciate that. (Better than most "packers" at the local market!)

Why isn't all sugar like this? Softer than over-processed sugar, though perhaps not as sweet. It's like a bag of edible soil.
The pouch it comes in isn't resealable, which is a bit of a pain.Otherwise, I don't see why I'd ever go back to un-organic sugar. Sugar is unhealthy enough on it's own without you adding things to it thank you very much.

Yum! This light brown sugar is so moist and robust in flavor. It has quite a deep molasses flavor. I would say that if you are switching from a mainstream brand you would compare this "light" brown sugar more to the flavor or main stream dark brown sugar. It is quite moist though- I can't say that enough. I haven't used it to bake with yet- but I prefer it in my coffee and it has a complex flavor that I haven't found in other sugars. I am on subscribe and save and will continue to receive it this way. Great price.
