Travel back in time to that glorious time we called the late 1980s, when crossover was king, allowing punks and metalheads to unite – at least on certain fronts – to revel in music that was faster, louder, nastier, more political, and just flat-out more interesting than anything else going on in either scene. While the U.S.-based pioneers of crossover – D.R.I., C.O.C., et al – tend to get the bulk of the recognition for building this style of music, it would be just plain wrong not to include Nottingham’s Concrete Sox in any and every conversation about it. SoxCore Records and Boss Tuneage have joined forces and re-released some of Concrete Sox’s finest moments on both CD and limited-edition vinyl, including the band’s classic second album, ‘Whoops Sorry Vicar!’, which is rounded out by a killer crop of demos from the period between 1985 and 1988 and a handful of stellar live tracks recorded in Prague in 1991, doubling the album’s original tracklisting from 11 to 22 total songs. While the album itself has long been established as an essential part of any serious hardcore and/or thrash fan’s collection, the reissue drives the point home with the inclusion of both live and demo versions of ‘Euthanasia’ and ‘Today’s World’, along with must-hear demos of ‘Speak Japanese Or Die’, ‘Not That Blind’, and ‘At Tea With Satan’. Brilliant and essential and incredible and… did I mention ‘essential’?!
