For the good part of the last quarter of the 20th Century, the northern part of the Ireland underwent what was called by the media, "The Troubles." Interesting choice of words, but it said nothing. What was happening was a continuation of the struggle that led to the 26 southern counties separating from the United Kingdom. The Irish government spent the period obfuscating about events.
They could only go so far as they would be delegitimizing their own positions if they did.
Heartfield and Rooney ask the right questions and come up with good answers. Their book is the best resource on the Irish State and where it stands a hundred years on.
