In the Garden of Eden, there was only one "No." Everything else was "Yes."

In this short book on Christian childrearing, Douglas Wilson points out that we have a Father who delights in us and makes it easy for us to love and obey him. If that is the kind of Father we have, shouldn't we earthly parents do the same? Wilson explains how parents should not just try to get their kids to obey a set of rules or to make their house so fun that following the rules is always easy. Instead, he calls for parents to instill in their kids a love for God and His standards that will serve them well all their days.

This book also features an appendix in which Doug and his wife Nancy answer various parents' questions about various applications of the principles discussed in this book.

This book is published by Canon Press. At Canon Press, we’re gospel outfitters: no matter who you are or what you do, you’re called to be increasing in Biblical faithfulness. That’s because Jesus’s death and resurrection changed everything: All of Christ, for all of life, for all the world.

As the wisest man said, “Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works” (Eccl. 9:7).

We believe reformation and revival start from faith in the Lord with joyful obedience to the Bible, and that is what makes everyday tasks significant and transforms culture. Because of these beliefs, we offer books on Christian living, encouragement, contentment, raising kids, healthy marriages, educational choices, classical education, homeschooling, politics, government, feminism, identity, manhood, womanhood, singleness, virtue, and so much more.

Book Summary A small collection of thoughts on mothering when you are motivated, when you are discouraged, the times when discipline seems fruitless, and when you are just plain old tired. This is what it looks like, and feels like, to walk as a mother with God. As we look to Scripture for patterns of masculinity for our sons, we find them manifested perfectly in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the one who set the ultimate pattern for friendship and courage, for faithfulness and integrity. Your household is not just a shelter from a war zone; it is the command center from where you launch your attacks. It's this vision of the world, with the Christian family at the heart, that modern parents desperately need to recover. Parents need to train their kids’ minds, bodies, and hearts so that they are prepared for the real world. This is a high and difficult calling, but we can look to God’s promises to help us as we train our children. We are called to see modern technology as wealth and tools that we can use, whether for good or for ill. The key is wisdom and the ability to create the right habits and the regular discipline to use what we have been given.

This book was refreshing and easy to follow along. I enjoyed the references to scripture and have learned something along the way. I really enjoyed the question and answer at the end and was kinda sad to have reached the end. I just want to love my kids some more

This was a quick read on the importance and joy of Christian parenting. Lots of encouragement to keep the principles of children as our brothers and sisters in Christ in mind, also encouragement to intentionally bless your kids with encouragement, joy, love, and memories.

This book is so good I think just about everyone should read it. I plan on reading it once a year. There is so much wisdom and clear explanation of first, how to parent, but beyond that, how we should relate to each other in our families in whatever role we find ourselves.

A lot of grace-based parenting books can be so discouraging. Give me a list and I’ll live by it and hammer my gavel on it! This book didn’t leave me feeling discouraged at my legalism. I feel like there’s a lighter, less burdensome approach to raising children set forth in this book.

Doug Wilson’s writing style is the reason I usually pick up his books. This one didn’t disappoint! But as a teacher, and as a young woman who dearly desires to have my own children someday, I loved reading the principles laid out in this book. There are ideas that I’d like to implement in my interactions with students and ideas that I want to apply to my own life.

One thing that stood out to me was that disciplining children often isn’t teaching them to not do the thing; it’s teaching them how to discipline. This changed my perspective and approach to dealing with misbehavior!

Even if you don’t have or want kids, you can gain from reading this book! But I would recommend it for anyone who works with kiddos, and especially for parents.
