i didn’t really know what i was expecting out of this book purchase. the price was right and it was recommended from a tiktok. it’s a gently used old book, it smells just like how old books should smell. (: there was a clipping from a newspaper from 1999 tucked away and it was was such a relevant surprise. idk if it was on purpose, but it was much appreciated. 🐶🐾

This book is very educational and interesting. It has helped me to make my dog a better companion for my family. Everyone that gets a dog should read this book and use it as the guideline for a well rounded family pet. Maybe then there would not be so many dogs in the pound that have behavioral issues and they are not wanted anymore. Big CUDOS to the aurthor for a well writen book.

I recommend this book for all dog owners. It is a very thoughtful analysis and summary of research based guidance for owners. I especially recommend it for adopters of older dogs.

My husband loves this book. He bought one for a friend. It really dives into the psychology of the dog. Excellent book for dog owners. Highly, highly, highly recommend!

Must read for dog owners

As a dog trainer, owner, and rescuer I highly recommend this book. It has been around for a long while and almost everything in it has stood the test of time. It helped me a lot when I had breeds whose behaviours I didn't understand. It is an easy read and doesn't try to "sell" you on a specific trainer's theories. I've leant, and lost, many copies of this book and my students have loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars KNOW WHY DOGS DO WHAT THEY DO AND HOW TO GET THEM BEHAVING PROPERLY IN A KIND AND CARING WAY
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 13, 2020
We borrowed this book from the library for our second dog way back in the early 90s to help sort out a few problems and now with our new dog it's no longer available in the library so bought it from Amazon.
This book is invaluable in helping solve issues using behaviorist training. No need to read cover to cover but look up your issue in the index and bingo there is a full explanation on why theres a problem (usually with our behaviour/expectations) and how to correct it, explaing the psychology of the dog and its expectations of us as pack leaders and the history of dog behavior mostly stemming from its wild ancestory.
John Fischer explains clearly and simply the whys and how to deal with it and other parts that have bearing on the why. It's like having your own personal dog behaviorist with you all the time and not just on a TV series or DVD.
Cant really explain it but anything that's seems a problem he has a clearly explained answer for.

As a person who has always had dogs I thought I knew almost everything there was to know about owning a dog ,how wrong was I?
I recently got a rescue dog and found it had a multitude of problems which I found hard to correct but once I read this book I understood my problems from a another angle . After reading this book I now have a much calmer dog who is I'm sure with a lot of time and effort and understanding of the canine animal going to be a very different dog to the one I brought home .

I would recommend this to anyone interested in dog behavior. I would consider that it is a bit out dated with some of the methods and explanations, but all in all it is a good book to have as a reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars This the best book I have ever read about dogs
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2016
This the best book I have ever read about dogs. If you do not know anything about dogs, it will tell you everything you need to know. The chap who wrote this was a Vet in Putney, London, SW15. He has now left this mortal coil. Did you know for example, that dogs wag their tails in anger as well as happiness. That was in there. I had no clue and I have had dogs all my life.
