Why Spy? is the result of Brian Stewart's seventy years of working in, and studying the uses and abuses of, intelligence in the real world. Few books currently available to those involved either as professionals or students in this area have been written by someone like the present author,

About the Author

Brian Stewart, MC, CMG, went from Oxford into the Black Watch and studied Chinese during the pre-Communist turmoil. His career in the Malayan Civil Service and during later postings in Asia, including in Hanoi during the Vietnam War, was frequently concerned with intelligence in the field and his
subsequent position as Secretary of the Joint Intelligence Committee in the Cabinet Office gave him a bird's eye view of the intelligence bureaucracy both in Britain and the United States. He continued to work in Asia, mostly in China, after leaving government service and to follow developments in
the intelligence world with a critical eye. Samantha Newbery is Lecturer in Contemporary Intelligence Studies, University of Salford.

The personal reminiscences are the reason for reading the book. The remainder, the consideration of various crises from Pearl Harbor onwards, needs reworking using up to date sources. For example, to refer to the Penkovsky Papers as though genuine without noting that they were a silly forgery that CIA officers were always somewhat embarrassed about is not ideal. Read Near and Distance Neighbours for the latest on him. The co-author could benefit from all the reviews regularly published in Studies in Intelligence on the CIA website.

This provides a very informative overview of the intelligence world, techniques, and concepts. There were times when I wished the author had gone into more detail or had expanded more on the examples or arguments used. Also it ended quite abruptly (although this may have been intentional as the last chapter is on Assassination!)

However, I did get what I wanted from the book and it has given me some ideas of what to look into next.

The world of intelligence is a fascinating one. It is rare indeed to have the guidance through its intricacies of someone of the calibre of Brian Stewart CMG, supported by an upcoming young academic in the field, Samantha Newbury. Brian Stewart’s life experience is extraordinary. In 2015 his superb portrait by Paul Benney appeared in pride of place in the Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, as part of the exhibition of portraits of veterans of the D-Day landings commissioned by HRH The Prince of Wales. After Oxford and the Black Watch he was launched on an incredible career in the Malayan Civil Service during the Emergency. He was British Consul General in Shanghai in 1961 and during later postings in Asia, including in Hanoi during the Vietnam War, he was frequently concerned with intelligence in the field. He was subsequently Secretary of the Joint Intelligence Committee in the Cabinet Office. He continued to work in Asia, mostly in China, after leaving government service. From this long and rich experience he takes us through the complex needs of obtaining and assessing intelligence, illuminating the past as well as posing hugely important questions for today. This book is thoroughly worth reading.

Das Buch ist klar und deutlich geschrieben. Ich finde es leicht verständlich. Untermalt wird der Inhalt mit reichlich Beispielen. Ich denke, für jemanden der einen Einstieg in das Thema "Intelligence" sucht, ist dieses Buch überaus geeignet.

Eher ungeeignet ist das Buch für Leute, die ihre analytischen Fähigkeiten schärfen wollen. Zwar gibt es ein Kapitel "Methodology", hier werden jedoch "nur" verschiedene (...)INTs beschrieben. Gelungen ist meiner Meinung nach in diesem Kapitel die Trennung Humint / Techint und das alles weitere darunter subsummiert wird.
