If you want to understand the roles that stress plays in health and disease, and especially the roles that it plays in early childhood development and in aging, this is the best place to start. The author ranges widely, debunks a number of overblown conclusions, and explains clearly what we know and don't know about the ways that chronic stress causes damage, particularly to the brain and the immune system. Sapolsky's writing is extremely clear and accessible without ever trivializing the subject.
