You get used to it after a couple of emptying intervals and develop the technique that makes it second nature.
It will raise the room temperature by around one to two degrees but, it's a outstanding ratio verses the drop in humidity.
The noise level is noticeable but reasonable for my application.
The electricity usage is minimal considering the unit runs almost continuously.
I'm seriously considering buying another one for the rest of my house as, this unit was purchased specifically for a dedicated 28' x 15' music studio/rehearsal room where electronic equipment and musical instruments are located.
If the unit proves to have durability, it is a 100% winner.
Whynter Energy Star Portable Dehumidifier is sent by the Gods to banish all moistness and keep us healthy! It was easy to set up, followed the directions which were self explanatory. It is not that loud, I actually like some noise in the house. Its like having a fan on. There is a "turbo" setting which is like a super sucking of humidity and that is not a quiet setting but I only see having to use that if there is a moisture emergency like the washer flooding, or extreme weather.
I love that I can set a timer on it! a few hours a day and forget it, it will automatically turn off! You cannot put it near any dryers, electric heaters or the hot water heater just to be safe. You also must give it enough room to work, preferably 10 inches away on all sides from any wall or furniture. We have a small apartment so this device is pretty giant in it, but its easily tucked into a corner. I set mine for 4 hours the first day I had 3 cups of water. Its very easy to empty and clean. There is even a constant draining hose if you have a floor drain in your house somewhere.
I am grateful and excited to finally eliminate some of my allergy symptoms without the use of pharmaceuticals, I only want to make our house welcoming and free of any nasty molds or dust mite communes.
I have been trying this out in Houston, though only in October so it isn't that bad. The floor, a lower one, I placed it on generally runs around 55% relative humidity, this lowered it to near 40%, which is a huge improvement. Under normal operation it isn't all that loud more of a background noise, though I can see it bothering some people. The timer works well and the bucket is adequate, only needing to be changed once a day. I did not try the hose as the space isn't suited for this, but it is a pretty generic unthreaded hose. My only real complaint was the absence of an instruction manual
It is centrally located in a 1200 foot space consisting of 1 large and 3 smaller rooms. On installation, we set the unit to 35% and the meter read a shocking 51% humidity in the house...which I guess should not surprise me, as we were experiencing 90% humidity and cold outside of Polson, MT.
The unit immediately began affecting the moisture level and by 24 hours had eliminated all of the condensation that we were experiencing.
If you are looking for a humidifier in this price range and of this capacity, then you will not be disappointed. For us, we empty the unit every 24 hours and have not had any problems with maintaining a consistent humidity level, even with all of the evening hot showers.
After using this until all winter and into the spring, I still highly recommend it as an essential home product!
This has a continuous operation setting, which should be used for the first couple days before setting it to the desired humidity level. It has a built-in hygrometer with an automatic setting. I have mine set to 55. I question the accuracy of the sensor because sometimes the unit will be operating when the hygrometer reads less than 50, and sometimes it will not start operating even though the humidity is above 60. It does work well to keep humidity levels in check, but it is still worth pointing out that this unit is not 100% accurate.
The appearance of the unit itself is decent for a dehumidifier. It looks better in real life than it does in the picture. It also cleans well with a dusting cloth or some paper towels. I know this is purely superficial, but it is something worth considering for a unit that will be placed conspicuously within your home.
The unit does have a continuous draining option. I have not used this feature, but be warned that the outlet for continuous draining does not fit a standard garden hose and the tubing included is *very* short. If you want to use the continuous draining feature, you should plan on purchasing some flexible vinyl tubing at a suitable length. (I'm sorry I don't know the size, but if you take the included length of tubing to a hardware store, you should be able to find the right size.)
Finally, the 10-pint capacity of the water bucket works well for my purposes. I probably empty this once a week, at most. In addition to a light that indicates when the bucket is full, there is a gauge in front to tell you how full the bucket is at any given moment.Read more ›
