Top customer reviews
Yes, it is an improvement over the old one for the obvious reasons: its integrated pump works as expected, freeing me from the constant irritation of having to empty the tank (especially since this is a part-time home for us, thus the old unit would fill up and stop working while we were away). Also, this is EnergyStar compliant. I knew those two things would be good.
So, what is better than I expected? 1) It is measurably quieter than the old unit, even though it is a larger (50 pt) unit. If, like me, you are replacing an old dehumidifier, you will probably be surprised how much quieter it is. 2) Even though it is larger than my outgoing unit, the Whynter generates less heat. This is a welcome surprise, especially since it's used during the summer (when heat is the last thing I'm looking for). Obviously, this must relate to its improved operating efficiency. 3) I was very surprised (pleased) to discover that this unit DOES NOT operate its fan continuously. There is some contradictory information about this in these reviews but let me assure you: while it does run its fan for longer periods of time than my old unit (which did not operate continuously), when the humidity level is below this unit's set-point, the unit stops operating. Nice! 4) While I haven't had any problems with the unit, I did have a reason to contact the Whynter Customer Service department by both telephone and email (asking about the height that the internal pump would pump the accumulated condensation. Answer: 15 feet elevation). They gave me very prompt and courteous service.
I don't like to read reviews for products that have not been put through their paces, which is why I wanted to use the dehumidifier for a while before writing this review. So far the device is excellent and I am very satisfied with its features and performance.
All the reviews I read stated that the fan turns off when the humidity level is reached. It may if it does not have to kick back on for awhile. In general it runs all the time. The manual says it does this so not to cause a surge when the compressor kicks in. This is a lie. This is a cheap way of meeting the energy Star rating. It has a computer control board and it could shut the fan down before starting the compressor but the government rating system is set by a bunch of people that have no experience in electronics or electricity. So the fan runs constantly. Gee, that uses electricity!
It is not very quiet such as Consumer Reports and other sites indicate. You don't want this in any room that you live in on a regular basis.
The water tank with the pump will only drain about half the tank. This is because of the pump fill tube that also interferes the bucket removal and replacing.
I gave you all of the issues. The unit is not bad unit (make sure the pump hose is pushed in all the way) but with a bit of redesign it could be a great unit. Once you get used to the quirks, you will be happy with this as a basement unit.
2 slight issues with the Whynter is a bucket that is a little on the flimsy side and a plastic part that attaches drain hose tube to the pump outlet. This part cracked causing it to leak water. I did a search on the internet and could not find any company that sells parts for this brand. I contacted Whynter by email and they immediately responded and sent me a replacement part- great customer service. The pump feature works very well. Fit and finish as well as controls are good and well designed.
