Reading Wicked Cool is a guilty pleasure. This is a book that's aimed principally at teenagers, mainly at girls, and I am neither of those. But I'd heard good things about Diane Farr's writing and so I decided it would be fun to give this one a try. The novel starts with a cracker of an opening sentence: "I saved somebody's life today." The second sentence isn't too shoddy either: "And the awful thing is, I shouldn't have done it." If you aren't gripped already you're a colder fish than I am.

Wicked Cool is a modern take on an eternal theme - what if there were more to the world than meets the eye? What if things didn't work as they seem to and the people we know aren't what they appear? What, in short, if magic were real?

In Wicked Cool, we are in the recognisably `real' world but it is one in which the laws of physics can, occasionally, be `tweaked' - at least, by people with the Power. I don't think it gives too much away (as it's given away right at the outset!) that the novel's narrator, Zara, has the Power. Just how and when she should use it is one of the central tensions of the story. There is also the problem of how to keep her powers secret. As she says, it's bad to have secrets but worse to have your secrets found out.

It soon turns out there are secrets in Zara's life that even she doesn't understand. That's when Lance comes in. Lance, you see, is a spellspinner. And, what you may wonder, is one of those? I guess you'll have to read the book to find out.

Zara has supernatural powers and doesn't understand why she's different from everyone she knows. Enter Lance, incredibly hot, supernaturally powerful, and full of answers to questions she hasn't even thought to ask. But is everything he says the truth? Now, Zara must decide if he's the love of her life or her enemy. Which world does she belong to, and is the choice of how she wants to live her life really hers? I couldn't put this book down and only ask Diane Farr, when will there be a sequel! I MUST know more! This book delivers and will keep you fully entranced.

I have a huge collection of fantasy novels, both YA and adult. I was searching for a new book, a new author, something to read until my favorite authors issued new books. Confession, I purchased this book, because it was inexpensive ($.99 for the kindle edition) and highly rated. Low risk, so I figured I'd take a chance and see if it was any good. I loved this book! Told in the first person, readers uncover things as Zara does. There's the mysterious teenage boy, that Zara's overwhelmingly attracted to, who says he's there to help her learn how to use her powers. But he's hiding things from her, she doesn't trust his motives, and he's coming between her and her best friend. She's confused by what she's learning, jealous, scared and torn between her old life and the changes that she senses lie ahead. Make no mistake though, being confused and uncertain definitely does not mean she's weak willed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was so disappointed that I couldn't immediately find a sequel. I want to know more! I've added Diane Farr to my list of authors who I'm impatiently waiting for their next book to be published.

I am giving this book a 5 star because it is a great book. The author did a great job with the story and the characters. A wonderful book for a 12-16 year old girl. I am not a teen but I do enjoy young adult books but this is for young teens. I will only recommand this book for young teen girls. My niece would love this book and she is 13. The perfect gift for a young teen girl!

Zara has always known she was different, being capable of using what she thinks is magic since she was a child. IS she a witch or some other mythical creature? She has no answer because her Grandma has asked her to never speak of what she is truly capable of in fear that Zara will be taken away. Confiding in her friend Meg she soon realizes that her 16th birthday will be the day when her questions get some answers because she is starting to feel something brewing.....enter Lance the gorgeous and mysterious boy with answers she always hoped for, and their undeniable attraction to eachother is not what either expected, but Zara is still trying to figure out if he is an aly or an enemy, so while she pushes off his advances, he turns to Meg, but will he be able to tear their friendship apart...dum dum dum!! (LOL!)
I like how Zara is a strong character, she meets a boy she is crazy for but instead of going all Bella Swan she gets to know him better in order to prevent herself from losing sight of their objective, teaching her who she is and what she is capable of. I like how Meg is a real friend, not flimsy or whiny or self obsessed like most supporting female characters are. People will love to find out what happens next, but I definately think this is aimed more for young adults, I am a little too seasoned to find myself saying wicked cool :) Still a good book though, I loved Zara!!

My 12 year old finished this book then begged for a sequel. While an avid reader, she can be difficult to please. As much as she loved Harry Potter, she hated Hunger Games. It can be tough to find a good read for her since she dislikes heavy romantic elements but enjoys a light romantic subplot. Typical tween. In Wicked Cool Farr hits a home run. Recommended for 11 and up, especially for girls who have moved past Percy Jackson but aren't Twilight inclined. The 12 year old isn't given to book reviewing. I asked her why she liked it and this was her response;

" I liked all the characters, it was easy to understand why things were happening. I mean, it made sense that they would. It didn't seem stupid. The magic made sense and so did the people. The girl was really nice to her friends but she didn't go along with the evil guy. She was pretty smart. I liked all of it. I wish there was another. I liked the suspense. The ending left you hanging, I want to know the rest of what happened! It wasn't frustrating though, I mean, there was an ending, I just wanted to know more things about everyone."
