Holy Hell. Lyle Tarpin is one hot man! I loved the instant chemistry between Lyle and Sugar. I went through a rollercoaster of feels reading this one. It was heartwarming, funny, sexy, heartbreaking, and steamy!
Lyle is in top of the world. An actor in demand. And living a lie. Carrying an unseen guilt, and an endless pain of loss, he won't let anyone too close. No relationships. Faceless. Many. Meaningless. Paid escorts only. He just needs the release. A quick speed dial and his night is set.
Sugar, aka Laine, finds herself in a desperate situation. Broke and in imminent danger of becoming homeless, she goes down a path she never thought she would. She had no idea how a knock on a hotel door could change her life forever.
Outed by an unrelenting media, the two need to pull off the best acting job ever. But what happens when playing for the cameras becomes too real? When buried truths are unearthed? Will the past doom their futures?
I love these Stark books! The intertwining of both new and old characters and story lines is just amazing! I'm forever a Damien Stark fan, but Lyle? He's my guy.
Desperation makes people do things they wouldn’t ordinarily do and that’s the situation that Sugar Laine finds herself in when Hollywood Heartthrob Lyle Tarpin gives her an offer she can’t refuse. But that’s only the beginning for Sugar and Lyle because what’s supposed to be one night…what’s supposed to be a way for Sugar to save her family home and then walkaway leaves them both ‘pretending’ to not want to make everything real between them…not for the media or for the money…but for themselves.
I absolutely adored Sugar Laine; she’s definitely my kind of heroine because she doesn’t pretend to be more than she is and even though she’s in dire straits, she doesn’t compromise her principles or allow those around her to make her feel inferior…don’t get me wrong, she does make some questionable decisions and perhaps doesn’t think everything totally through when she reacts, but she never stops being the woman she’s always been, which is what I think adds to her intrigue when it comes to her getting under Lyle’s skin.
Lyle Tarpin is currently Hollywood’s “It” actor and boy is he taking advantage of the luxuries he receives due to his rising status, but behind Lyle’s killer smile and model looks is a man who never allows anyone to truly see him…to truly understand how dark he is due to the secrets he keeps, and while Sugar allows Lyle to not feel so smothered by the darkness, the only person who can truly help him is himself and that’s easier said than done when it comes to coming clean on a topic that Lyle would rather not have come to light.
Lyle and Sugar’s story started a little slow for me, but once the photo was released and they became a fixture in each other’s lives, the pace of the story as well as my interest grew. I love that J. Kenner always allows readers to check in with the other characters in her Stark family and while they’re only their briefly, it’s always good to see what they’re up to and know that they’ll pop up every now and again, either to help out the main characters or just offer insight from shared experiences.
The Stark World continues to tantalize and tease with delicious storylines and main characters who are rising stars in their own right, even if they don’t feel that way when their story begins, and although the hero and heroine may be from completely different worlds, when they collide, there’s nothing to prevent them from exploring what they seem to get from each other and no one else regardless of the slow burn of their relationship.
4.5 Poison Apples
Wicked Dirty is the second book in the Stark World series. I have yet to read Wicked Grind, so I can confirm that this book can be easily read as a complete standalone. I enjoyed the characters and romance in Wicked Dirty, and it’s made me want to go and one-click book one asap!
Sugar Laine- who preferred to be called Laine- was a likable heroine. She was extremely hard working, independent and kind.
Laine is about to lose the last piece she has left of her family, and the only home she has ever known to foreclosure. Desperate times called for desperate measures, which is what brought Laine to the hotel room of ‘Mr. Z’ one evening as a hired escort. By the end of the night she would be ten thousand dollars closer to paying off her loan to keep her home. Only things don’t go quite as planned.
‘Mr. Z’ turns out to be Hollywood hotshot Lyle Tarpin. But that’s not what had her changing her mind about this night. She saw the pain, anguish and turmoil behind Lyle’s eyes. She recognized his need for her as an outlet to channel his pain, and she knew that she just couldn’t be that person, no matter how attracted and drawn to him she was.
Lyle was not your typical Hollywood Grade-A jerk. He was very generous, respectful, kind, considerate, and didn’t have an ounce of the “celebrity ego” you might expect from a rising star. But there were also two different sides to him- neither bad per se- but one was the persona he played in public and the other the real him who he wanted to keep hidden from everyone. But two things happened that he didn’t count on. Laine saw through him and someone else, saw them.
A paparazzi captured photos of Lyle with Laine and once they surfaced online, what was supposed to be one night, turned into a fake relationship. It was necessary to protect his career, his reputation and to ensure that his co-star kept her hands to herself. What they didn’t know was what started out as a fake relationship, would soon develop into something very real.
I loved Laine and Lyle together. From their first meeting, I thought that they had great chemistry! Their relationship slowly blossomed over time and it was very sweet, I was rooting for them every step of the way. I thoroughly enjoyed as they got to know one another and began to trust each other enough to share painful memories and secrets of their past. Lyle was especially swoon-worthy and I adored him.
There wasn’t a major amount of conflict, more so that the main character had to stop being the roadblock in his own life. Lyle needed to come to terms with his past and believe that he deserved to be happy. I enjoyed seeing the growth in his character, as he slowly let himself fall for Laine and began living life for himself.
If you love the fake-relationship troupe, I recommend Wicked Grind. If there’s another one to come in the Stark World series, I’ll be reading it!
