Well, obviously, that meant I had to read this book because it was written by my QUEEN. And to my pleasant surprise, WICKED GAMES was actually really, really fun! It's got a reality TV premise. Abby works for a media company as a book reviewer (heart eyes) but when one of the contestants for their television department bows out of a reality competition, Abby is forced into it with a lucrative book deal held over her head as a reward. Plus, she might win the two mil!
Dean is in it to win it and at first Abby can't stand him. So naturally, she ends up as his partner. Even though he's a jerk, she has to admit that he's got the physical parts of the competition nailed-- and she's incredibly smart, and can act as the brains of the operation. Their talents complement each other, and as they spend more time with each other, their mutual enmity seems to fade... but is it real? Or is it just all part of the game?
This was so much fun. It captures everything that makes reality TV such a guilty pleasure to watch. I liked the setting of the Cook Islands and I thought the author did a good job coming up with interesting challenges and drama to fuel the fire. The ending gave me so many feels and even though there's an HEA, it ended up feeling a little bittersweet. I didn't realize how invested I was in the couple until they really put my emotions through the wringer in the last act.
I'm definitely going to be checking out the other books in this series!
3.5 out of 5 stars
Abby is a book reviewer for a national magazine. Her boss and their sister company TV network want her to be a contestant on a six week island survival show with a prize of two million dollars. She is to do a scoop on the inside story of the contestants, a book deal and a TV show, but she can't tell anyone about it. Abby isn't excited about the idea, but pressure from her boss and the show's producer make her feel like she has no choice to keep her job.
She is partnered in the Cook Islands with Dean. He is handsome, athletic and full of confidence. At first they have a real problem communicating and getting along. Forced proximity makes them learn to work as a team. Over time they become a couple. They just nicely start a relationship when they are torn apart. Again, they fall prey to miscommunication and hurt feelings happen because of it. Can they find their way to the truth and each other?
Wicked Games is a whirlwind of action, scheming, and sexy love making. In the beginning it gets right to the point, them asking Abby to join the games. She wasn't into it till they told her that afterwards she would get a chance at a book deal (she’s a book reviewer) writing about her experience on the island. But once she gets on that island and deep into the games, she forgets all about the perks of joining and falls for a guy she thought was so out of her league.
I absolutely enjoyed the games, though some could have been more exciting but I know there has to be one sort of simple one. However, I enjoyed the most of them. Watching Abby and Dean work together was hilarious! In the early stages of the game, Abby threw little cans of paint at him after a challenge because he was being such a dick, ugh, but this act of hers led the others to believe that they were weak, not a problem for them, setting up an act that they used against the others in hopes of staying longer on the island.
Honestly as the story went on I didn't see the real connection the author made them seem like they had. I didn't feel them really getting to know each other. I only saw them get to know how they are in the game of survival. Though I was excited when they did finally get together "together" (hey, I'm almost 21 so this girl can get excited for that kind of scene ;) haha). But like I said, I was kind of sad that I didn't feel that true connection, I just felt like it was all lust. After their first, steamy time together, they finally started to ask questions about each other. But I don't know, I felt like it was kind of late, a small part of me though. They asked the questions I've been wanting to see however I feel like most have been hidden behind a curtain, the author only showed so much before moving quickly to the next scene.
Abby was one that wasn’t confident in the beginning of the games but Dean changed that for her. Dean was a dick but he starts to become someone you could love. The rest of the cast were exactly like what you would see as if you were actually watching a survival show right now. So if you're a fan of them then you'll no doubt be hooked into this free book in no time. Overall this was an enjoyable novella. I see there is a new one written by this author. I so want it! Oh also, later in the book I felt like when Abby confronted Dean she was a bit too harsh.

Abby works for a media company. One that has a hand in the survival show in question, Endurance Island. Someone has dropped out of the celebrities and the production company think it would be a great idea to put an 'insider' into the running. Someone who can scoop the dirt and also write about her experiences after the show with a major book deal. Therefore Abby is more pushed than asked to take the final place. She isn't an ideal candidate but in her favour she did, with the help of a professional, edit a survivalists handbook a while ago. She picked up more than a few tips on how to survive when dropped on a desert island.
Abby arrives and is immediately thrown into the competitive world of the twelve celebrities. They all want the prize of 2 million dollars badly. So much that they will literally step on you or shame you at every opportunity. The other competitors see Abby as weak and don't make her feel comfortable in her new surroundings at all. She's paired with the hottest guy on the show although she has no idea who he is and what he does in the real world.
Dean Woodall openly admits his eye is on the money but he does want the challenge of competing. He wants to win, and he'll do whatever or whoever he can to get what he wants. He doesn't understand why Abby is being so difficult and in the beginning is scared to have a conversation with her in case she chews his head off..again.
Abby and Dean get put into couples who must get through the first few days together. That means working together on tasks and getting along. They don't. In fact, they make themselves into a spectacle because of their instant dislike of one another. Eventually though, they do start working as a team and get good results.
But Abby starts feeling more for Dean than she should. Firstly she's the insider, she should act professional being as the cameras are on them all the time. And secondly, everyone who's in the competition has a game plan. Abby unfortunately doesn't. Her mindset is different because her goal isn't to win, just get as far as she can.
I did enjoy this book. The dynamics of the game are well thought out and there are some funny moments when Abby and Dean spar constantly. As with the game structure, this book has a structure to it as you travel through the days and weeks from Abby's POV. At times she is a little naive around Dean, she doesn't exactly know what his deal is but we're given little snippets from Dean's POV at the start of each chapter. As the story carries on you can see the different competitors begin to use and lie to each other to disrupt the accord of the game.
There are some things I didn't like, however, that just felt off to me. I would say that if I was a media plant I wouldn't get hot and heavy (very sexy heavy) with my partner because it would always be on my mind that a) cameras are there, and everyone's watching, and b) when the show gets aired my entire family would see what was going on, and c) I have a job to do and that's the only reason why i'm there.
So, in contrast, Abby and Dean's closeness is believable but to go further? Obviously without this there wouldn't be a point to the book but that's my thought process.
The writing is great though the ending was a little predictable and finished very quickly. The other thing that struck me was how little we actually know about Abby at the end. After the show finishes she doesn't talk about her family or work at all. Something I felt could have taken away the one dimensional aspect the story had at times.
Still, there are others in the series featuring different characters for other reality TV shows. I might take a chance and try them out :)
Heroine - Abby Lewis: 26 yo brunette, book reviewer, works for a magazine. Considers herself to be average looking. She's very angst-y, plays up all the time., and seriously lacks dignity
Hero - Dean Woodall: 29 yo contestant on a survival show, super hot (WHICH WE ARE RECEIVE REMINDERS OF EVERY FEW CHAPTERS). He's the clichés tall, dark, strong handsome type and apparently intelligent (but intelligence will have to be an subjective description because I'd describe him as a Pretty Boy /Barbie).
Everyone Else: either gay, unattractive, a conniving b*tch, a Blonde Barbie etc.
Scene 1: at Heroine's workplace
Heroine: I don't want to do Reality TV.
Boss: Yes you will.
Heroine: NO!!! I'm not pretty or fit enough!
TV Producer: but you're reasonably young and healthy enough
Heroine: that's not enough. I'm not stunning or skinny!
Boss: don't care.
Heroine: But I'm a respectable intelligent book critic!! I don't even have fake boobs!
Boss: No reality TV means no job.
TV Producer: you will receive a huge book deal if you do it
Heroine: oh well!! Ooookkkaay then
Scene 2: Endurance Island
Heroine: OMG I'm so fat and ugly. These people are gorgeous
TV Presenter: I'm your cliché sleazy TV Presenter!
Heroine: there's a girl with fake boobs! I don't fit in!
TV Presenter: You all must complete a challenge! Start now!
Heroine: OMG Fake-Boobs-Girl tricked me!
Fake-Boobs-Girl: You're so fat and can't swim. Fat Thighs!
Heroine: These pretty girls are so shallow! I don't fit in! I'm not blonde and pretty enough for this!
Hero: I'm the good-looking arrogant guy!
Heroine: OMG Hero is sooooo HOT. But he's rude
Hero: I will be rude to Heroine
Heroine: You are soooooo RUDE
Scene 3: Choosing a Partner
Heroine: OMG Hero is SOOOOOO HOT. But I hate him.
TV Presenter: choose a partner!
Heroine: HERO IS SOOOOO FIT
Hero: I choose Abby (reluctantly)
Heroine: OMG I don't want to be with him but he's soooo much more better looking than the bearded weird looking guy.
***lots of fighting and scowling between hero and heroine*****
Several Scenes Later: Hut
Heroine: Hero is soooo HOT. Every other man is either gay or ugly.
Hero: I am so hot
Heroine: Hero is soooooo HOT. I can't stop staring. Even though he's rude
Hero: I'm a super stud who can beat any challenge!
Heroine: I'm not good enough for hero - he's tooo hot. The other girls all want him to. Everyone wants hero.
Hero: I'm a bada$$.
Heroine: Hero is sooooo manly. No one else compares! He can beat them all
Hero: I am super manly.
Heroine: I wanna make out
Anyway it's basically Abby acting up, then falling for the hero (and vice versa) all the while the cameras are watching and she proves an instant hit. Everyone else just doesn't compare to the hero.
But what let the book down the most were the cringe worthy scenes. I wanted tell this girl to have some dignity. Their whole time together (and even after) the Endurance Island show is there for public consumption with the Heroine completely forgetting her "I'm a serious book critic" background.
Also, the ending was such a let down (I don't mean the epilogue).
This book requires endurance, so it's not only those on Endurance Island that require it.
Slightly predictable, you'll get your sexy man versus intelligent woman, alliances formed, back stabbing frenemies, some spit your coffee out fun moments and some shouting at the kindle saying - nooooo don't listen! That's enjoyment right :0)
So if you like reality TV, steamy scenes, hot bodies, Island living and competitions then you'll enjoy the escapades and wicked games that that happen on the Island with Dean and Abby. A fun, sexy book that is a standalone, so no cliffhangers to get yourself worked up about, which let's face it, that's a humungous bonus in itself nowadays!
Abby is a feisty female who isn't prepared to be walked over by any man. I loved how she stood up for herself and showed her true mettle. The painting game that went awry made me laugh out loud. I loved the peanut butter episode that is mentioned in the synopsis and I loved the gradual and growing friendship between her and Dean. I was really sad when I thought it was all falling apart. I thought the sex scenes were well written but most of all I loved the warmth between them.
This is a well written and edited book with a good introduction, an adventurous middle and a superb ending. What is not to like? Well worth a read.
Duped by another contestant, she finds herself voted out of the game and gets to view the show's footage, her faith in the relationship with her former partner unravels. It seems she has been tricked and used as a pawn in the game, so that ultimately he might win $2mill. But does she have the full story and is she right in her judgement?
