Sadly, Cancelled

For any that don't know, this book was cancelled due to the controversy involving Jessica Verday's short story Flesh Which Is Not Flesh and editor Trisha Telep asking her to change it from a homosexual romance to a heterosexual one, which then caused nearly all of the authors to pull out. More detail can be found by Googling, or reading Jessica Verday's blog.

It's really a shame, as I was very excited about this book; I have yet to find a "mainstream" (meaning one that can be found on a bookshelf in Barnes And Noble or a similar store) YA faerie anthology. It's also a shame how Telep reacted. I find it a bit strange she is also the editor of Kiss Me Deadly, which features a story in which two semi-important side characters are in a lesbian relationship and yet gave no grief about that.

I knocked off one star for Telep's shameful reaction and being the cause of the subsequent cancellation, and one because we will undoubtedly never get to hold this one in our hands as it was originally meant to be. I chose to leave this review and rate this book because the authors who would have been a part of this are all very talented and would have written dang good short stories. A couple of the stories have been/will be released (including FWINF), and I personally very much hope Lesley Livingston's story, which would have been about Maddox and Chloe from the Wondrous Strange-verse, will see the light of day in the near future.

All in all, were it not for Telep's close mindedness, I'm sure this would have been a fantastic book. One can only hope that all the stories that would have been in its pages will be released someday soon, or that the project will get picked back up again with a new editor.

(An interesting tidbit: Telep, who has edited all in the 13 Tales series so far, was meant to be the editor of the next book, Brave New Love, but has since been replaced.)
