I liked most of this book, but some parts were annoying:

1) Lucien has numerous, repetitive thoughts about why he can't marry Horatia because her brother won't allow since a) he has dark desires and b) the league's code says no seducing sisters. Then he won't marry her because he's not the marrying type. Then he thinks he'll marry a nice, quiet girl so Horatia can move on and get over him. Too much waffling and too much repetition.

2) The author's explanation for some of her character's behavior doesn't match my experience of human psychology. An author like Mary Balogh has such a strong grasp of psychology that her characters actions and thoughts always make sense. This book was just a little off. The villain, Waverley, is a spymaster for the British government and feels strongly about protecting his country, but he views the heroes of this book as a threat so he must kill them? I had trouble integrating those two sides of the villain - honorable and patriotic, yet vindictive and socio-pathic - it was just a bit off. There are other similar examples of the hero's thoughts and actions not quite meshing, and that gave me pause several times, taking me out of the enjoyment of the book.

3) This is a modern historical. I had the impression the author is fully aware of 1820's proprieties, but the characters pretty much do whatever they want to do anyways. Horatia goes to a pleasure house to meet Lucien, they spend the night in each others' beds, they spend many hours alone together, not to mention Horatia's sister Audrey and her scandalous behavior. And there's a lot of physical contact - Audrey whacking her brother's friends, the friends throwing her over his shoulder, etc. - typical behavior by today's standards.

Let me start off by saying Lauren Smith has done it again. Lauren has written another must-read-can't-put-down-love-the-characters-to-pieces book. This book will have you from page 1 and will not let you go until you have turned the last page. From run away carriages to cats stuck in chimneys to duels at dawn there is never a dull moment when the League of Rogues are involved. This book has one of my favorite romance novel tropes man in love with his best friend's sister. That is the reason I read this book before book 1. Horatia is loyal, intelligent, passionate, a lover of cats and books, and willing to do anything for the man she loves but stay away from him. Lucian are hero is a bad boy rake who loves his family, has been with his far share of women, and has been in love with Horatia for a lot longer than he wants to admit. Lucian is very protective of Horatia and that feeling scares him. I love how Horatia trusts Lucian completely which is one thing that Lucian has always wanted in a woman. One of my favorite things about Lucian is how he is always there for Horatia whenever she needs him no matter how big the problem. Lucian is into a little bondage in the bedroom so if that isn't your thing just a heads up. Lucian and Horatia have such a strong emotional connection and trust in each other. They are both very passionate people and bring out that in each other. Horatia is always more relaxed around Lucian and not afraid to just be herself with him. They are a perfect match. There are so many wonderful moments in this book between Lucian and Horatia but my favorites happened at Lucian's country estate when Horatia, her sister Audrey, and brother Cedric go there for the Christmas Holidays. That is when Lucian finally starts to see that he is in love with Horatia.Read more ›

All I can say is that I am so looking forward to The League of Rogues Book 3, 4, 5...to infinity!

Lauren has developed characters you can't help but love. Lucien is struggling so hard not to give into his feelings for Horatia...because of his friendship with her brother. Lucien is too honorable to break "rule 2" - meanwhile, Horatia is in love...and has been for a long time. No matter what, her heart is given over to Lucien. Waverly, on the other hand, needs to get his comeuppance! He is evil and I really want to start seeing the League taking over this situation.

Now...Cedric and Anne...can't wait for their story.

Fun follow up the Lauren Smith's first novel in her The League of Rogues series. The characters were nicely matched with lots of well written sexual tension and angst as well as a bit of romance! As in her previous work in this series this novel is well written and paced. The story carries through to the end. This novel can be read as a stand alone, but a nice bonus for the reader is being able to follow up / be introduced to characters presented in her first novel in the series as well leading the way to their stand alone stories.

This author cannot write these Rogue stories fast enough for me. I'm sitting here dumbfounded at how pleasantly surprised I am by her talented writing...and again, this plot swept me off my feet and carried me away beginning with a 5' studded BANG and carries that echoing, resounding crescendo to its final line.

The League of Rogues are a group of peers of Englands' "upper crust" who are without rules or morals. They are five...(well, now six since one more has been added to their fold).... of the most handsome, rich, influential and eligible men in all of England with notorious reputations for ruining women...(well....so it's told). And they like it that way...keeps the "mama's" from trying to snag them into marriages for their daughters. They're all best friends who are more like brothers.

She's an angel with the grace of a queen. She's educated and intelligent, with her soft doe brown eyes and curly deep chestnut hair. She's naive with a sensual innocence that she is unaware of. She's strong and supportive and when trouble hits...she holds herself together. And 20 year old Lady Horatia Sheridan is in love with a devil...a rogue....an impossible situation for her brother, Cedric (also a rogue brother) will never condone her marrying one such as Lucien!

He has smoldering topaz-hazel/brown eyes and slightly long dark red hair..and he's longed for Horatia in ways he's never craved a woman before. But he could never have her because of his debauched reputation. She deserves more.... Lord Lucien Russell, Marquess of Rochester should never be with a woman as lovely and pure as Lady Horatia Sheridan for he would corrupt her, ruin her reputation and damage her prospects. She deserved courtesy, respect and propriety.
