INTRIGuING ROMANCE WITH A TWIST

REVIEW: WICKED WHISPERS BY TINA DONAHUE

It is the year 1488. The Inquisition and it's demands torment many of the inhabitants of Spain. While so much revolves around magic and devil worship, only a few find themselves safe from the evils surrounding this time. All had to be careful of what they did and said. Then there were those who spread gossip and fear with rumors of devil worship and magic.

Senorita Dana Sancha defines herself as a healer. She reads and spends copious hours researching cures for various diseases. When anyone falls sick with fever or wounds, she helps them mend. Never does she want marriage where a man can tell her what she can and cannot do, knowing her husband would force her to cease. The only man who can tempt her heart is Enrique.

Enrique de Zayas is the man who she thinks wants to change all of her hopes and aspirations. Yet Enrique falls so in love with Sancha, he is willing to do anything to win her heart and protect her.

Lucinda de Cortes wants to wed Enrique. She will stop at nothing to see the fall of Sancha and herself in the magnificent castle owned by Enrique.

The plot and characters are well developed. The research into the Spanish Inquisition is well done. I loved the descriptions of the clothes, décor in the castle and surrounding areas.

For me Wicked Whispers has a major twist and a surprise ending. I love surprises. I highly recommend this book for all those who love historical romances.

An Independent woman ahead of her time

Granted life is busy and we all have a lot to do. Personally, I’m in grad school and have endless piles of thought-provoking, densely written textbooks to go through. So what better way to scape my overwhelming homework than reading, right? LOL But that’s exactly what I do! I take a break from reading by reading some more. It’s always been like this. I tend to balance out ‘heavy’ – those that require a lot of higher order thinking skills - texts with ‘lighter’ ones. You know, the books one chooses just for the fun of it.
When I picked Wicked Whispers up, I thought it would fall into the latter category. I mean, it’s the end of quarter and I have tons of deadlines to comply with. I just needed an easy read to unwind with for a couple of hours. Well, did I pick the wrong book! Wicked Whispers sucked me in from the very beginning and I couldn’t put it down. However, the setting and plot grabbed my imagination in quite an unexpected way. Plus, the topics the book deals with made me pause to reflect on that time period and the many hardships people in general faced back then. I’m a History buff and a feminist so the Inquisition is one of my favorite periods of time; but I hadn’t read anything interesting about it for the longest time so it was a refreshing change.
And have I mentioned the story is HOT and STEAMY? It is and then some. As an avid reader of erotica and an author of erotic books, there’s very little that can still impress me. Tina Donahue’s writing did that! Her style is elegant and appropriate for a historical fiction while keeping the heat on, if you get my meaning. LOL She fleshes out her characters effortlessly and the story flows seamlessly. The main characters - Sancha and Enrique – are multi-faceted, complex, real, and believable. The supporting characters are just as great. What else do you want in a good book, right? Finally, Wicked Whispers is part of a series; however, it’s a stand-alone story. No huge cliffhangers here! Just the way I like it!
I recommend this book to those who like to read well-researched, beautifully- written historical fiction; to those who enjoy a complex erotica story about independent woman and the men who help them keep their freedom.

A sensuous romance set in a turbulent era!

A romance set during the Spanish Inquisition.
Well. Quite honestly I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, I've never really thought of about reading a historical romance set during this period or even wondered about the Spanish Inquisition itself. One thing I will say about this book is that it brought to attention how much I take for granted, being a woman during the Spanish inquisition was not an easy thing. Especially for Sancha.
Sancha is a progressive and independent woman stuck in age where woman are seen as a means to either gain heirs or more property.
If a woman shows to much interest in a subject mainly for men, she's a witch.
If she doesn't want to marry and have babies, she's a witch.
If she speaks her mind, she's a witch.
It didn't really take very much for a woman to be tortured and burned at the stake for witchcraft. And while nobles like Sancha were rarely accused they were not immune.

"I want you because of the joy you give me. Tell me you accept my offer."

I know I haven't mentioned the romance and before you think this isn't a romance let me set you straight. This was most definitely an erotic historical romance. The romance and sex scenes were lush, sensual and very descriptive. And while I've read many erotic romance novels, this one set a very different mood, and I think that was because of the formality of everyone's speech and the writing itself.
But trust me it didn't take away from my enjoyment.

She lowered her face. If his words had come from another man, they would have sounded like an accusation of witchcraft. How she wished to live in a different world where women's lives weren't made unnecessarily difficult. Forcing them to hide their feelings, tell lies when the truth would have served better, and to always wear fear as men did their sense of privilege.

Enrique is besotted. He is dead set on having Sancha, he wants her as his wife while she will hear nothing of it. Don't be fooled though, Sancha desperately wanted Enrique but not at the price of losing one of the most important things in her life. The freedom to use her skills as a healer. And while being a woman and healer is almost as a good as being a witch in the eyes of the Spanish inquisition, trying to do it while married would be impossible. No husband would ever allow his wife to travel with no escort, to heal peasants of all things. At least this is what she thinks Enrique will say.

And while Enrique would rather she not put her life at risk, he's willing to do anything to make her happy as long as she becomes his wife. These two were so hot for each other, there were so many intense scenes between them than began innocently enough but would end with them both horizontal. Enrique had so much patience with Sancha. At times I wondered if she even realised how much danger she was putting not only herself but her family in. Was healing the sick worth the chance of being taken by the inquisition? Possibly at the hands of the very people she was helping?

This book dealt with so much. Lust, love, sacrifice, jealousy and most importantly fierce determination. The romance is a big part of this book, but I honestly felt like it took second place when it came to the battle Sancha had to go though for her independence. And she was very determined.

One of the characters that was introduced in this book was Tomas (Enrique's brother, who seems like a really funny character although I think that will change, I'm definitely excited to read his book!
