From the four corners of the Southwest comes our smoky Chipotle Black Bean Soup. We wrangled up chile peppers, fire-roasted veggies, and perfectly soft black beans to go into this bold soup with a mighty fine texture. Campfire not included.

THE BASICS

One 17-ounce carton

We combined the best flavors of the region in our signature black bean soup. Hearty black beans were a given, then we added a zesty blend of yellow corn, fire-roasted red peppers, diced onion and select chilies. If it were any more authentic, we’d serve it out on the range by an open fire.

A Slightly Peppery Kick

We wrangled the finest peppers this side of the Rio Grande to create the smooth, smoky flavor of our Chipotle Black Bean Soup. We paired soft and tender whole black beans with quinoa for bold texture, then we layered our blend of chili, ancho, chipotle, and cayenne peppers to give this hearty soup a slightly spicy kick. Yee-haw!

I enjoyed this soup. When I poured it into the bowl I was worried it was going to be too large a portion for my lunch, but it turned out to be the perfect size. Well spiced. I can eat very spicy foods, so I usually find commercially produced soups to be too bland. The spice on this one was very nice--not too little, so that I had to add more hot sauce or cayenne pepper; and not too much that it overpowered the taste of the soup. Definitely one of the better shelf-stable black bean soups that I've had.

I was glad to discover it, and will probably buy it again. Now to try the minestrone and butternut squash soups!

Fire roasted green chilies and red bell peppers add so much flavor to this hearty soup. Loaded with corn kernels and black beans, and seasoned with onions, garlic, celery, lime juice, ancho and chipotle chili powder along with cayenne powder it is complex and spicy but there is no heat. Overall excellent flavor although the lime is a little intense. Delicious served with warm flour tortillas, corn chips or corn bread.

The 17 ounce carton contains two 150 calorie servings. Fat grams are a low 3.5 with canola oil noted on the ingredient list about half-way down. Highlights from the nutritional breakdown include 27 grams carbohydrate, 6 grams protein, 5 grams sugar and 6 grams fiber. If watching salt intake, soups are notoriously high and this one is no exception – 830mg (35 percent of daily value.)

The soup is not condensed so do not dilute. Cartons like this are easy to open, just lift up on the side flaps, squeeze where indicated and then tear off the perforated strip at the top edge. No can opener needed. And, if desired, a serving can be poured out and the rest refrigerated for use within 7 days. Small boxes like this also take up less pantry shelf space. As an estimate of shelf-life, the box I received has a Best By date 16 months in the future, but this will vary.

Delicious soup! Will order again in the future. But, the seasoning tastes quite milquetoast out of the box. Unless you have caucasian taste buds, it could do with a little salt, a pinch of finely minced garlic, a lotta chili powder, and a dash or two of red pepper flakes. I also added lentils and rice to make this into a complete protein, and stretch it into 3 whole meals; served on tortillas.

Nicely spiced black bean soup

This is delicious soup. I'm a fan of black bean soup to begin with, and this has a nice flavor.

It's a wee bit too spicy for me, so I like it better with a starch. Something like corn bread or potatoes would work well. (I just made some polenta and put in hunks of that, which worked well). I'm glad they didn't add the starch to the soup, so that you can figure this out for yourself.

I'll mention that I like the carton packaging for soup as well, and not needing a can opener. These are foil-lined boxes, so you do need to put it into a bowl (and not just microwave the box, if you were tempted).

For me this was a 4.5 stars really, I wouldn't say love but it was more than just like. First off the ingredients are really clean. Next, the nutritionals are pretty decent, not for those afraid of carbs that's for sure, but that is nature of beans. The calories are 150 for 1 cup, sodium is a little high coming in at 830mg, but there are only 5 sugars and none of those are added, 6 grams of fiber, 6 grams protein, and only 3.5 grams of fat. At first I was a little surprised by how watery the soup was, but after chowing down on it for a while I actually preferred its texture to other thicker black beans soups I've had. the spiciness level was perfect, not too much, not too little, my husband was just fine yet I was happy too, often it is hard to strike that balance with us. At first there was a flavor that seemed out of place but as I ket eating I figured out it was lime and I really started to like it a lot, so big thumbs up on the addition of the lime flavor. Price points are on par with what I spend in the grocery store on the usual brands I buy, so thumbs up there too.

Foremost, when you see the container, you might think that it's "small." I did. (Even more so when you realize that you do not add water). But once you get this on the stove, you will how much is truly here! The back indicates that it serves two people. In this instance, I would say that is spot-on. It appears somewhat stew-like in the photo, but in reality, it's a pretty thin broth (in all the best ways). The aspect that's hearty is exactly what you want: the beans and veggies. There are red peppers, corn, onions, and beans. Now, the onions were pretty polarizing. Half of the family won't eat anything with onions ... but the half who doesn't mind them, enjoyed this soup very, very much.

Know that this has a vegetable broth and is vegetarian friendly (which is perfect for meatless days or for those vegetarians in your home).

The overall impression was that this soup is both hearty and tasty. And, that's rather remarkable in a soup that you can truly feel good about!

Recommended for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike! This also comes in a case of six. So, sample this one and then grab the case to stock up your pantry. (There are also other vegetarian soups from Wicked Prime! The squash one is truly outstanding and great for those days when you want a creamier soup!)

I love soup.
Usually black bean is one I can take or leave.
This is a great soup, perfect chipotle heat. That warmth of the smoked peppers isn't overpowering, but it's unmistakable.
Thick and hearty. Even if you normally shy away from bean soups, you might like this one.
There are times when I can get that often-joked-about side effect from eating beans, but no problems with this soup.
I'm glad they sell it in larger quantities, consider me an addict.
