This Masala butternut squash soup is silky and flavorful. The ingredient list includes butternut squash, coconut milk, carrot, apple, ginger, soy sauce, garlic and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Note, for people with sensitivities, the soup contains wheat soy and coconut. Utterly delicious, the flavor is nicely balanced. Before checking what was in it I could taste the coconut milk, soy sauce and ginger.

Not condensed, so do not dilute, and whether hot or cold, this soup tastes excellent. Toasted pumpkin seeds or fresh basil leaves are good choices for toppings. Each 17 ounce carton contains two 210 calorie servings. There are 10 grams of fat (9 saturated), probably from the coconut milk since there is no other added fat. Other notable numbers include 30 grams carbohydrate, high 16 grams sugar, 2 grams both protein and fiber. If watching salt intake, like most prepared soups it is quite high – 850mg sodium (35 percent daily value.) Delicious.

Cartons like this are easy to open, just lift up on the side flaps, squeeze where indicated and then tear off the perforated strip at the top edge. No can opener needed. And, if desired, a serving can be poured out and the rest refrigerated for use within 7 days. Small boxes like this also take up less pantry shelf space. As an estimate of shelf-life, the box I received has a Best By date 16 months in the future, but this will vary. I will definitely buy in the future.

If it were up to just me I'd have given it just three stars because I feel this soup is just "okay", but my husband liked it better than me, so I gave it four stars which is "like". I was surprised my husband liked this soup because he normally doesn't go for spicy stuff so much because it gives him heart burn, but he was fine was this soup. I thought the spiciness level was just right. I didn't bother letting the kids try it since I knew this would be too spicy for them. My problem with it was the taste, I think there is just too much going on flavor wise, too many different flavors. I like spicy foods, I love masala, even my tea is masala, but this had another flavor going that didn't mix and I didn't figure it out till I re-read the ingredients, soy sauce. I love soy sauce, but it isn't right mixed in with what is supposd to be an Indian flavor. I am not even sure about the apple in this, and you can definitely taste that too. I have eaten many types of butternut squash soup and have made my own before as well, I won't buy this one again. Apart from the taste the nutritionals are rough. I know the high calories and high fat comes mostly from the coconut milk and that coconut milk is a healthy fat, but 210 calories for serving or 420 for the whole box is too much. Worse yet this is also high in sugar thanks to added sugar and apple puree concentrate (at least it isn't HFCS), 16 grams per serving or 32 grams for the whole box. The point to butternut squash for a soup is that its own natural sugars should be enough to not need added sugars, some recipes use sauteed onions to add a little more sweetness, but this soup had too much added. I appreciate the clean ingredients of this soup though, Wickedly Prime is really trying, another reason I was willing to give it four instead of just three.

THIS is an interesting soup. Using butternut squash and spicy seasoning this Wickedly Prime soup got mixed results in our household.

The kids generally found it too spicy and I agree that I would like it better if it was a little less hot. My husband was a little surprised by the sweetness and the color; but he was having it with a bologna sandwich for lunch.

I think the spiciness is going to appeal to some people and for lunch I think what bread you select will be important. Something dense and faintly nutty would be nice. For dinner I would suggest you dollop the top with sour cream or creme fraiche. Something because the color is a little off-putting if you have ever changed the diaper of a baby with gastric distress.

SUMMARY
This Masala Butternut Squash soup isn't going to be for everyone. It's hot a spicy heat that many children, and some adults, aren't going to like. It has a sweet rich flavor which contrasts with the spicy. I happen to like it but my husband though it was like pumpkin pie soup. I think it would be an excellent selection for a dinner party. I would serve small bowls with breadsticks, or a whole wheat roll. The spicy and yet sweet soup would contrast beautifully with roasted chicken, beef, or lamb.

This just arrived in time for a late lunch (I was getting hungry!). Very easy to prepare, heat and eat. You can use stovetop (which is what I did) or even heat in the microwave.

The taste is creamy and sweet, with a very savory curry finish. Nice spice level. I don't think it would be too spicy for anyone unless you are extremely sensitive. Creamy smooth texture. One box is supposed to be two servings but I found the whole box is about the right size for me if all I am having is soup.

This is a great "comfort" food.

Great hardy soup, with lots of flavor

I liked this soup. It was thick and flavorful. Now I’ve never had curry before so I don’t know what it tastes like, which made it hard for me to place all the flavor in this soup. I can tell you though the squash flavor is nice, but you can’t really tell there’s coconut in it. The cayenne was noticeable without being overwhelming. My wife said she found it sweet, but she’s weird about things like that. Butternut squash is a bit sweet, and I did not taste any added sweetness at all. Even though cane sugar was an ingredient it was way down on the list and I didn’t taste it, but the squash really came through. My only minor issue was it left a very slight bitter aftertaste. Not sure it that is what curry does, or maybe it was the ginger. Like I said it was very slight though so not a big deal. For a cold day you won’t go wrong filling up on this soup.
