Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A curious frog goes a bit too far when querying his neighbors about their eating habits in this simplified, pop-up version of a traditional American tale. "I'm a wide-mouthed frog and I eat flies," he announces, demonstrating in flamboyant, 3-D splendor just how he got the appellation "wide-mouthed." Each spread features a different animal describing its meal of choice, including a blue-feathered bird (worms and slugs), a furry brown mouse (seeds and berries) and, finally, ominously, a big, green alligator. The creatures are depicted in sunny colors and and show off uncomplicated but large, well-constructed pop-up beaks, whiskers and snouts. When the alligator answers that he eats "delicious wide-mouthed frogs," Frog's comical response, resulting in a climactic fold-out "Splash!" will have readers giggling aloud. Ages 2-6.

From School Library Journal

PreS?A greatly condensed, pop-up edition of the universally known story of the bragging wide-mouthed frog who ends up changing his tune and trying to make his mouth as tiny as possible. It's a tale that is particularly effective when the teller exaggerates the mouth and lip movements. This shortened version denies the chance to develop audience participation. Bright, watercolor-and-ink pictures have child appeal as do the pop-out tongue, beak, and snout of the animals included. The splash at the end is "extensive" but is part of the back cover and demonstrates how fragile the book is. Not practical for circulation, this title would be nice as a supplement to the actual first telling of the story or as an example of fine paper engineering.?Kathy East, Wood County District Public Library, OH

Pop-up books are a great way to get kids interested in reading. My son is 5 and will be entering Kindergarten soon and he hasn't taken to reading on his own much. When I noticed how much he enjoyed the flip tab and pop up books, I went crazy on Amazon ordering all I could find that might be of interest to him. While I have found many that are great and educational, this book has to be the funniest. It doesn't really have any educational content, but my 5-year-old asks for it almost every night. This book is only a few pages so I don't mind reading it along with another book. The first time we read it, and of course added some original character voices, we both laughed for a good two minutes. He now has it memorized and likes to do the voices for the charaters(so cute).
Brief Synopsis: The frog is a very curious one and he enjoys asking other animals what they eat, after boasting, "I'm a wide mouth frog and I eat flies." After asking a bird and mouse, he runs into an alligator that seems to be interested in him. The pop ups are great and the end is a huge payoff "SPLASH"! I say it's a must have!

Absolutely loved, loved, loved this book - my husband brought it home after a business trip when our boy/girl twins were just six weeks old, and by the time they were a year old, it was one of their most favorite books...and remained so, for several years. The illustrations really come to life with these amazing pop-ups, and the huge "Splash!" at the end always sent the kids into giggles. Eight years later, I purchased another copy of the book to send to my brother's baby boy - and he loves it just as much as his cousins always did. I highly recommend this book for anyone with children aged anywhere around 10 months - 4 years, and even older!

This is the book that helped my five-month old become an avid book lover. She is now seven months and she taps on the cover of the book whenever she wants me to read it with her (which happens about 30 times a day). The text is wonderful for mimicking the different animals and the book allows creativity during the reading process using the pop ups. When my baby cries, I usually pick up the book and she starts smiling instantly, excited about the prospect of reading it again. Now she shows an incredible interest in books of all kinds, curious about what treasures they hide.

I do Preschool (3-5 years) and Mother Goose (6 months to 2 years) storytimes at the public library where I work. This book is one of my very favorites but more importantly it's also one of my kid's favorites. Yes, you have to do the voices of the animals! The pop-ups are great. This is one of my favorites of all the many pop-ups I own. Keith Faulkner's other pop-ups are good too, especially when he teams up with Jonathan Lambert. In fact, Faulkner is my favorite pop-up author and I wish I could get him to come to my library. (I think he lives in England.) Even though this one is his best, don't stop here. Get more pop-ups by him.

Great book, I really like the pop ups on the animals, but it wasn't much of a story. Overall a good purchase.

This beautifully illustrated and well written book has brought new and colorful language to special children with little to no language. They asked me for "The Wide Mouth Frog". Thanks for your prompt attention.
