The story is set in 1893, when a woman was considered the property of either her husband or her father. The story is about a woman who escapes domestic abuse and tries to move on.
Lily runs away when she thinks she accidentally killed her husband by hitting him over the head with a lamp when he was choking Toby.
Parts of the story are a little evasive to keep the audience guessing . As a result; I thought Lily's husband, Tobias, was actually still alive because Lily didn't check for a pulse to see if he was dead.
I also thought it was weird that Lily thought she would go to jail for defending herself and her son. I didn't really like the male lead, Edric.
Washington State 1863
In a desperate move, Lily Bremmer flees her home with her young son, Toby; moving them to the small community of Kamola. Will they be safe here so far away from all she has known and the troubles she leaves behind? The first person she meets is the sheriff, widower Edric Hammond, as she disembarks from the train. She is not sure she wants to be friends with the sheriff but as time goes by she finds herself drawn to him and his two daughters.
I enjoyed the interaction between Lily and Edric as they learn to trust each other and themselves. They both have things in their pasts that they would rather forget, however, the past has the potential to impact everything in their lives. With love, faith and forgiveness, can they form a future together?
A heartwarming story.
~I purchased an e-book copy and also received a PDF ARC copy of this book from the author/publisher (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~
I'm a sucker for whump stories and this was 110% one. We have the terrified heroine doing the best she can for her beloved son, and we have probably one of the kindest, most understanding heroes in the world ever. I loved the story, the kindness of the people in this town the heroines runs off to, the strength of the heroine despite the horrible trauma that continues to affect both her and her child. I will admit that her son got a little irritating for me at times but I can and will admit that his actions/reactions were very understandable considering the horrors he went through in his young life
Warning: Physical abuse is described in one scene, mentioned a few other times and happens in the form of the leading lady being grabbed by the arms, wrist & hand and having them squeezed to the point of pain.
This is a sweet, squeaky clean, Christian, historical romance that is very well edited.

Edric is the towns law man he has two daughters and his Papa lives with them and takes care of the children when Eric is working.
Good story I enjoyed reading this. Personally I don’t like the abuse the two suffered but after they flee its better.
