Dani has been a strong woman since her teens. She may have a fiancé but she will not let that stop her from raising her sisters and figuring out how to make money for herself. Now she is in the last stages of getting money together to go meet up with her fiancé and is keeping house for a lumberman and his staff. The only thing is that while she is cooking for the local lumber operation, the boss doesn't know he has hired a woman. He assumed Dani was a man. Boy is he surprised when he first meets the little wildfire. He is instantly drawn to her.

Dani doesn't know what to do. She has fallen in love with a man who is not her fiancé. Well truth be told she fell in love with his stove first, but she had not met the man yet. When she does and determines she is in love with him, but won't forsake her fiancé, she sets out to find him a wife. What will happen when she accidentally asks that local madam to dinner? More importantly can Dani let another have the man she has grown to love? But what about her fiancé, Jamie?

I loved this late 1800's story set in the wilds of Minnesota. I found Dani to be a loveable character with a big heart, almost as big as the one Big John has. I have recently found Ms. Robinson as an author and A Wife for Big John continues to cement why she is becoming one I can count on for a wonderful story.

I was really disappointed with this book. It doesn't have any big "flaw", and I could give it 3 stars, but I'm annoyed with it, so I won't.
First, the romance. The characters had some great potential, but their romance felt so flat! I don't mind that there wasn't sex. Many great books don't have it. It's just that you didn't quite believe there was passion between them.

Second, the heroine... who hasn't seen her fiance in 10 years and still hasn't figured out they are not in love anymore (or never were)!! And then there is the cooking.... Let me tell you that I love cooking, and her cooking was just impossible!!!! I liked how the author vividly describes food, but I think she never cooked anything... We have this tiny person SLAVING herself in the kitchen, doing impossible amounts of food without breaking a sweat! There is a situation where she has about 20 minutes of free time and she manages to bake 4 apple pies from scratch!!! This girl has the energy of a monkey loaded with caffeine! Never gets tired, she cooks for a ton of people, keeps a big house spotless, and knits more than a hundred caps and gloves for the lumberjacks in a matter of a few weeks. Gimme a break!!

Northern Minnesota, 1893
Big John Thompson is a large man whose sheer size and booming voice often intimidates those who don't know him well. He's responsible for the lumberjacks who inhabit his timber camp and because of his last cook's decision to leave the camp he placed an ad for a new cook and hired one - but that's where his neat orderly life begins to take an unexpected turn.

Danielle `Dani' Jones has plans to work for John in order to earn the funds to continue her journey to California to be with her fiancé, Jaime. She raised her sisters after their parents' murders and took over the family orchard until she had all her sisters married off and then she decided to leave the orchard in her sister Donna and her new husband's hands. When times were hard and money was needed Dani cooked for the local timber camp so she has no doubt she's fully capable of everything required for the position she's applied for and been hired to fill.

Imagine John's shock when he returns home from a spring drive with the `river rats' - men who work the logs down the river often in near freezing water - to discover it overrun with children. He's dog tired and completely clueless about what's going on but it's the discovery of a woman giving birth in one of the bedrooms aided by an unknown woman that has him hitting the floor. Once he's roused from his faint, John's clued into the events as they happened - including the fact that the Daniel he thought he'd hired as a cook is really Danielle.

Big John is well aware that allowing Dani to work as the camp cook would never work but he isn't without a heart and has no intention of turning her out.

It was refreshing to read about a male character who was not terrified about his feeling for 599 pages then on page 600 is brought to his knees by the 'power of love,' after scorning and terrorizing the female character for most of the book.
It was refreshing that the main female character was 25 years old and not just 1 day over the age of consent.
Finally, a male character that grew up in a loving home and confident in expressing his feelings of affection.
Finally, no poorly developed sinister background plot to separate the two, just a man with principles.
Of course I bookmarked every single kiss!!
I highly recommend reading 'Mail Order Husband' by this author.
