"Every chapter was a puzzle piece that held important information to the unfolding of this story. While some questions were answered with each piece, new ones squeezed my brain. Once I started, I could NOT put it down. --- Bestselling author, Beth Ehemann

Wow, just wow! This book was more than I read to me, it was an experience.
From the very beginning you can see that this author put her blood, sweat and tears into researching and writing this book. In my experience it was almost like we were sitting in my living room and Brinley was sharing her story with me.
Brinley Cluff is married at 19 years old with polygamist Lehi Cluff. She's innocent and naive and tries to bend herself to the rules and regulations to the other wives as well as Lehi's, since she's the last one to come into the household. She is Wife Number Seven.
She's never completely accepted by the wives, specially wife number one, Leandra, who makes her life difficult from the beginning.
While in town one day running errands, her purse is stolen by a man she remembers from her childhood. Porter becomes a very important part of Brinley's life and a game changer, making her re-evalueate all that she's been taught until this point in her 22 years, and ultimately her faith and her life.
I'm not giving away any of the plot because there are so many twists and turns that as a reader you need to get into this book and savor it. I'm not going to lie, there were times that I wanted to call it quits and move on to the next, not because the book was bad, but because it was affecting my spirit in a way I wasn't ready for. The intensity of the story and the richness and depth of the characters will have you devouring the book in no time.
This is not a romance story, even though there is some of that in the book, this is a tale of a reality that is lived by many women and girls in the polygamist community. This is a book like no other. I was appalled by some of the things I read, but it was so interesting that I kept reading until I felt "free."
Fantastic job Melissa, words can not express how much I loved this book. I hope people pick up a copy and experience this amazingly beautiful written story.

Now you may be wondering why I rated a novel such as this with 3 stars. You may think I think this book is terrible, which is completely not the case.

My rating for this book reflect my thoughts on character development, storytelling, and pace.

I think, a reader will enjoy this novel because it is absolutely refreshing. Her writing style is easy on the eyes, very little redundancy (only three places that involved Porter saying the compound was his hell.) But the storytelling still flows easily, and naturally. It's a truly interesting novel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and could barely put it down, however there were a few things about the novel that I couldn't get pass.

Brinley, a very sweet and kind girl, had a lot of spunk and personality. However in my mind, I couldn't for the life of me understand what she looked liked. I knew she was plain, I knew her hair was long, but what did she look like? I was so engrossed with the story that I didn't realize that I couldn't picture her. At all, until I was halfway done with the book. I think the author focused a lot on great story telling, but skimmed a lot on character descriptions. I wanted to know what Brinley looked like from the author's point of view. I didn't want to guess and look on google for the specific type of look the author "suggested".

The same goes for Porter. (At least I know he has a nice chest. Dirty blonde silky hair. And blue eyes, but that doesn't necessarily give me a good idea.)

The same goes for Lehi. ( At least I know he has graying hair, he's old, and has bad breathe and doesn't floss, again...Not an ideal description when a reader wants to visualize.)

The same goes for Leandra.

Melissa Brown has officially ‘wowed’ me. I’ve read several of this authors books and I’ve enjoyed them all, but this was on an entirely different level. Original, captivating and refreshing- equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking. I devoured this, read it cover to cover. Polygamy is a topic I’ve always found interesting and Melissa does a great job writing about it.

Brinley is a twenty two year old woman. She is married. She is the seventh wife to a man over twenty five years her senior. This is the norm for her.

This is the way of her world. It’s the way to salvation. Most of the people in her compound are happy there. It’s the only life they’ve ever known and they believe it’s the only life they could ever have. Brinley is a little different.

Brinley has always been more curious about the outside world than the others. She has secrets. Secret wants, desires, she thinks about things that are forbidden to people of her faith. When she runs into town and sees a familiar face, even more secrets start to build.

Porter was once at the same compound as Brinley. He was kicked out at 16. He’s fighting his own battles, but he wants to help Brinley with hers.

Brinley is at a crossroads in her life. The choice between what she wants and desires, and what she’s always been told is the ‘right’ thing. All she knows is she has to make a choice. Before her secrets come out. Because then there would be no choice… and things would get messy.

Even though most of our situations would be nothing like anything Brinley goes through, she is a very relatable character. I loved reading about her becoming stronger, making choices for herself and discovering who she wants to be and what life she wants to live.
