My working condition are behind a desk, a cold floor, my feet sweat easily. They are usually wet in 1-2 hour period with normal cotton socks. Needed a balance between breath ability and warmth.
NOTE: I discovered that the shoes needed to vent as well as the socks. Shoes were fixed with the following shoes:
Salomon Men's X Over LTR Hiking Shoe
Columbia Men's BM3558 Switchback Hiking Shoe,Mud/Voltage
My rating still applies regardless of the shoes used.
The following are my observations (5 best - 1 worst):
Smart Wool. Warmth 5, dryness 2, comfort 4
Wigwam "At Work DuraSole" Warmth 3, dryness 4, comfort 5
Wigwam "Merino Comport Hiker" Warmth 5, dryness 4, comfort 5 Note: I still need to switch to dry socks in about 3 hours. My foot size is 10 ½ and the XL size is the best fit.
Wigwam "Everday Fusion" Warmth 2, dryness 2, comfort 3
Fox River "AXT" Warmth 2, dryness 3, comfort 3
Fox River "Wick Dry Off Road" Warmth 4, dryness 3, comfort 3
If you are looking to keep dry I would select the larger size when in doubt.
Okay, so what about these WIGWAM socks? This manufacturer has created a wonderful TWO LAYER sock that allows perspiration to migrate away from the foot leaving a dry and comfortable fabric next to the foot, so now a dry foot in warmer weather with just enough cushioning to provide for my foot problem.
For me this makes a perfect warm to cool weather alternative to the heavy hiking sock, and with the dark color they are acceptable in social situations, meaning they don't look like something a lumber jack would be wearing.
The lint/fuzz problems are history. These are the best socks that I have found in years. Yes, they are expensive, but over the last two months they have shown very few signs of wear and shrinkage. While writing about socks seems unusual to me, I believe that one should praise quality products and outstanding performance. Wigwam deserves praise for its innovative products and outstanding service. Yes, they do have sox appeal. The keys to keeping these socks in the best shape is washing them in COLD water and then drying them at low temperatures. A good detergent to use with these socks is Tide's new pods. I definately will buy these again.
