When it comes to screw drivers there are many designs on the market to address different needs despite the common purpose in either tightening or loosening screws. While the Wiha 26190 offers individual tools the same manufacturer also offers a single grip with different inserts like this Wiha 75093. The latter certainly is a potentially cheaper and more compact design than a discreet set.

Disclaimer: If you're old enough to remember McGuyver to dazzle viewers with (virtually impossible) contraptions out of simple everyday items, you might wonder what this very real and useful tool has in common with mentioned tv hero. ... and rightly so! ;-)

In essence, the Wiha 75093 offers the same seven basic sizes in slotted and Philips as the Wiha 26190 but combines it all in one grip and adds seven Torx sizes ...

This isn't a watchmaker's or construction set, but small Phillips sizes of #0 and especially #00 and the Torx sizes make it a very useful set.

As with other Wiha designs, the construction of the screw drivers is excellent. The tip material is the (for Wiha usual) CRM-72 tool steel and despite the engraving size it's relatively well visible albeit only on one of the siz surfaces and requires deliberate bit storage. The total of 14 bits are stored in a collar on the shaft of the driver and everything is fairly compact. The shaft can be removed to take the bit storage off.

An alternate use may be to remove the metal shaft and place the bits directly into the handle. However, be advised that there is no hard stop and the bit can be pushed all the way into the handle rendering the tool basically useless. Having said that, with careful use one can shorten the driver by removing the metal shaft along with the bit holder and carefully use the shorter tool. One might think about furnishing a space to insert into the handle to provide the missing hard stop for more diligent uses.

The bits are non-magnetic and rely on a ball mechanism to snap the bit in place. This might have advantages in cases where magnetic drivers could be harmful (i.e. with hard drives). However, this is something to remember should you decide to magnetize the bits.

The bit holder is snug to securely hold the bits. Due to the (small) size of the tools, however, it's not very easy to remove the bits from the holder. This is especially true for the 7 facing the handle.

Aside from the Torx bits and the more compact storage, one other difference to the Wiha 26190 may be the most significant. The handle material of the Wiha 75093 is actually designed to meet ESD (electro-static discharge) requirements in order to protect sensitive electronics. (Of course this is only one link in the chain and proper grounding is still needed.)

This driver offers a similar shape and construction as the individual Wiha tools. The rotating cap allows to rest the handle in your palm while for precisely controlling the turning with your fingertips. Given the typically small size of screw being driven with these tools, this is a really big deal for precision work (along with ergonomic benefits of not having to twist your wrist as much).

This isn't the only multi-bit driver on the market and the $30 sure isn't the cheapest, but overall the Wiha 75093 provides an excellent value due to its 14 bits and the very compact design.

I have carried this little screwdriver with me on every trip for the last 8 years (never had issues with TSA in carry on). I've lost count of how many times I have used this when I was in a pinch. It is just amazing to always have a good quality screwdriver set with you. No, it does not take the place of a set of full size screwdrivers but for an everyday carry this little tool is absolutely amazing. Reason I am writing this is because I'm getting this for a Christmas gift exchange, comes highly recommended.

Good, but rust prone

I purchased the Wiha 75093 like many have for pocket knife maintenance. Overall, it seems to be a good tool. There were some manufacturing quality issues with at least two of the fourteen bits. Some sort of molding problems that caused crevices on the hexagonal sides of the bits. This will not affect the use of the tool, but these bits will be harder to keep clean.

After an initial inspection, I stored the Wiha away in a closed and relatively dry tool box. After three months, 2 or 3 of the bits had begun to develop rust, as other reviews have noted. I've owned a number of knives and multi-tools that are made with a variety of steels including 1095, none of them have developed rust in the same in environment in the past 5 to 8 years. So, the Wiha tool steel does seem to be a bit more rust prone.

I have since applied Fluid Film to the bits and hope that routine applications will be sufficient to prevent any further rust. Long term, Fluid Film, which does have petroleum based chemicals, may damage the plastic bit holder. Ren Wax might be a better long term option. It also has petroleum based chemicals, but the wax coating will probably be more durable and long lasting.

Update:
After having this set for about 6 months and extremely light use (calibrating a mechanical barometer a couple of times), I noticed multiple splits in the bit holder hub. I believe this is a minor design flaw. If the driver compresses into the bit holder, the beveled edge of the driver wedges into the bit holder hub causing it to expand and split. The splitting will probably be limited to about half the length of each individual bit holder, but it may still reduce each bit holder's clutching power. Bits might be able to slip out of the bit holder unexpectedly. It might be advisable not to compress the driver too tightly against the bit holder.

I was a little skeptical of Wiha products as they are very pricy. I was looking for something that was practical for small, precision jobs and stumbled across this multi-bit set. I like that it is an ESD safe tool which is especially helpful for electronics and sensitive parts. The quality of the bits are top of the line compared to other cheaper sets. I feel like these bits will last a lifetime. My only minor complaint about this set is that the bit holder does not hold very well onto the screwdriver while using. It almost gets in the way of your work and is not a very practical design. It is removable, however, itt would have been a better design to make the bit holder into a sort of a grip which would increase torque when using. Other than that, it's a great little screwdriver set that's worth the money. Compact, high quality, and long lasting.
