Review

'A formidable answer to an age-old question: How can a man make himself tolerable and useful while accepting and expressing his primordial maleness. The searching and aggressive urges to conquer what needs subduing, protect the vulnerable, fix what is broken, compete and risk what demands to be risked in himself and the world? The author's message is set in the Christian tradition without being controlled by its ideology. Eldredge believes that institutions can oppress a man's heart and keep society from benefiting from his fierce desire to love, do good, fight evil, and go beyond the limits. The exceptional writing and ideational balance (and a sensitive interpretation by Kelly Dolan) make this a compelling effort to integrate the hero's gritty nature with the public good.' John Eldredge is an author (you probably figured that out), a counselor, and a teacher. He is also president of Ransomed Heart, a ministry devoted to helping people discover the heart of God, recover their own hearts in God's love, and learn to live in God's Kingdom. John grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles (which he hated), and spent his boyhood summers on his grandfather’s cattle ranch in eastern Oregon (which he loved). John met his wife, Stasi, in high school (in drama class). But their romance did not begin until they each came to faith in Christ, after high school. John earned his undergraduate degree in Theater at Cal Poly, and directed a theater company in Los Angeles for several years before moving to Colorado with Focus on the Family, where he taught at the Focus on the Family Institute.

John earned his master’s degree in Counseling from Colorado Christian University, under the direction of Larry Crabb and Dan Allender. He worked as a counselor in private practice before launching Ransomed Heart in 2000. John and Stasi live in Colorado Springs with their three sons (Samuel, Blaine, and Luke), their golden retriever (Oban), and two horses (Whistle and Kokolo). While all of this is factually true, it somehow misses describing an actual person. He loves the outdoors passionately, and all beauty, Shakespeare, bow hunting, a good cigar, anything having to do with adventure, poetry, March Madness, working in the shop, fly fishing, classic rock, the Tetons, fish tacos, George MacDonald, green tea, buffalo steaks, dark chocolate, wild and open places, horses running, and too much more to name. He also uses the expression “far out” way too much.

Even If It Isn't Quite You
I am not surprised there was a lot of negative feedback on the topics expressed in this little book. In these times it is no longer valid to use gender to explain why you may like or dislike certain things. This book is not meant only for the jock, or the outdoorsman. It is meant for the heart that yearns to find ways to express a passion that may seem wrong for a Christian man, and that's really it.There are many opinions on how we should behave, or more recently that we do not behave as men have in the past. It is true we are meant to be adventurous and a bit wild but that is a different thing for each man, not a template- the author was simply expressing it as he himself saw it. It is up to you to find your passion, your wild side, and break free of the life you may mistakenly think is correct as a follower of the Way of God. But there are many different paths, as long as we stay on that straight and narrow one, neither turning to the left or the right- being obedient, faithful. I would say if it doesn't trouble your spirit, go for it! The only opinion that matters is Gods, not mans.I myself do many things that aren't considered manly yet also do things that are over the top! For example, I write poetry, rescue ladybugs, read about decorating and color and style, and tear up over emotional things- I am sentimental, and I try to show empathy to others at all times. I also carry a concealed firearm, practice Tang Soo Do and Krav Maga, and regularly work out with weaponry such as knives and sticks- and I am trying to learn Iado, the Way of drawing and cutting with the katana. I love long walks, but I don't watch sports, and can't tell you anything about any team. I don't bunjee dive or shoot down the rapids or any of that, but I see it as valid. Again, if it doesn't become the end in itself it is all up to that old thing we used to call conviction- the Holy Spirit will tell you it isn't something you should do. It isn't nerds vs. jocks, or the cultured, educated man vs the uneducated manual laborer. (I work in a factory, and that is because I chose to work with my hands after spending half my life working in the Mental Health field.) We are all part of the body- and scripture says no particular part is favored above the other. So embrace your inner wild man and push your boundaries a little bit! For some of us it isn't much or very daring, but it is enough to inspire the soul.

This book allowed me to find the answers I've been wrestling with. John is an amazing author and captivates your feelings and emotions. His definition of our role in this life is spot on. Reading this book was not a coincidence, God knew the impact it would have on me. 100% recommend I will be reading it again and again.

The book every Man and Father should read! It changed my life when I read it 20 years ago as a new step-father. Ive re-read it numerous times since while raising my children. I now give out copies to young men and women to help them on their journies. Its a life changing book.

I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half. I related strongly to the premise that the author lays out that the biggest question in a man's heart as he grows and matures is "Do I have what it takes?" Good stuff. Plenty to sink your teeth into here. I just do not agree with the author's perspective that homosexuality is something people can be converted from. I find the vast majority of homosexuals were made this way by Nature--which is to say that 'God' created them this way. I am straight, but know far too many loving and authentic and genuine gay people to put in print that there is something wrong morally or ethically with gay people. When I read that I felt the author was 'playing to his base' of the vast majority of evangelical Christian thinking and that is a turn off. I very much believe in the union of man and woman but I would not devalue or discount or deny the loving and committed same sex union simply because that is not my nature. Expand your horizons and do not worry about what other people do behind closed doors.

This book is made for a man, but works for a woman. It does a better job of explaining the sexes than Man are from Mars, Women are from Venus in my view. And it's Biblical. Recommended for anyone with childhood or parent-child wounds in particular. GREAT book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Man and Father
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2023
This is an excellent read. John Elderedge talks about the true nature of being a man, explaining a man needs three things:
1. A battle to fight
2. An adventure to live
3. A beauty to love

He goes into detail, using the Bible as a frame of reference and also talking about ancient cultures and the right of passage from boyhood to manhood, something missing today in Western society.
I loved the bit when he said that in the Masaai tribe a man must kill a lion first before he is allowed to court a woman.
This is a must-read from every man and father, in order to restore manhood to where it was originally designed by God.
