I did not buy or hear this album when it dropped, for the good and sufficient reason that I had not yet been born. I grew up on my dad's vinyl Beatles albums. He never got into the Beatles' solo careers, and by the time I was buying my own music, The Beatles were no longer the stars they had once been.
So the good news for me was that I was able to approach the album with few preconceptions. I knew it by reputation, but I had never sat down and listened to it all the way through until this deluxe release. Amazon got it to me on the day of its release, and before the day was over, I had listened to both LPs twice.
I can see why 1971 audiences and critics did not like the album. After the slick production of "Abbey Road," "McCartney," and "Ram," "Wild Life" sounds unfinished and raw. From the vantage of 2018, that rawness provides almost all of the album's charm. The first side is definitely silly, but it works on those terms. The second side is uniformly strong, and I especially enjoyed the much maligned "Dear Friend."
The bonus LP really adds to the experience. I love hearing artists' creative process, and the outtakes are great! "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" is a fine protest song.
The vinyl pressing is outstanding. I cannot comment on the quality of the remasters, as I have not heard the original mixes.
came securely packed considering how they normally just throw their album's in a box with air pillows.
I opened up the vinyl with High Hi HIGH expectations.....and as soon as I dropped it on the turntable, I could see it was warped...crap..here we go again!......brand new vinyl warped!
but playable....then I put on side 2 and that was even worse.
Side 2 pressing had my tone arm moving pretty dramatically left to right....heat stress?
How it stayed in the grooves is beyond me...
The bonus record was flawless....BECAUSE the booklet was not crammed into that side
So before I return this which I will be doing at the end of January 2019.....waiting for the bad batches to be sold off first.
I already went and purchased from another site and the same thing.....warped!
Now they do have a booklet that is placed inside where the warped record is stored instead of placing it in the gatefold.
which may be causing the one disc to warp.
Now for those who are wondering how the sound is....well it is a much brighter and maybe that is not such a good thing on this issue
if you love Linda's voice....well .....it is really up front on this vinyl edition.....so much up front it's a shame Linda & Yoko never got around to doing a duets album cause I know how we all love their voices....especially together...WOW
So just beware...there are probably many defective vinyl copies pressed going around right now.....and since it is not a analogue transfer you may be better served by getting the cd editions.
when i get my replacement next year I will update at that time and hopefully that one won't be warped
Merry Christmas Y'all
UPDATE Feb.10, 2019
Well when it came time to return the defective vinyl on Jan. 31st, 2019......Amazon was out of stock and was not able
to get a replacement so I had to settle for refund.
As of this posting they are still out of stock so I will just wait for the deluxe box set to drop in price in a couple years
and pick that up instead.
I'm just fed up with all these new vinyl editions coming warped or with some other defect.
Don't know how all the other reviewers got perfectly flat vinyl copies....maybe they did not really check the record
while playing or they think it is normal to watch your turntable tone arm rising up and down as the record plays.
For the time being I will just stick with my original vinyl pressing & original cd w/some bonus tracks
