Do you crave adventure? In these pages, you can feel what it's like to race your kayak against a killer whale, narrowly avoid a backcountry avalanche while skiing with a coyote, and come face to face with a grizzly as you paddle a canoe. Some stories left my pulse pounding.
There are quieter pleasures, too: a woman spins musk ox wool, a little boy catches his first salmon, a man watches deer grazing kelp. The potential for intimacy between humans and other animals is richly conveyed in these skillful essays.
A former Alaskan, I felt homesick reading this book. Nothing else has brought me so close to what I loved most about living there. I recommend "Wild Moments" to anyone who dreams of Alaska, whether your dreams have come true yet or not. Anyone who cares about wildlife and enjoys animal stories would take pleasure in these: They are among the best of the best.
Readers will appreciate the respect each author shows for the creatures he/she encounters, and will gain a better understanding of how important it is to keep wild places WILD. I would highly recommend this book.
P.S. This book would be accessible and FUN for a literature class or a short story class to study.
